Hands-on with the Magic Mouse

Well, I got my Magic Mouse a few days ago, and I've been using it for my everyday tasks for a few days (and I'm still using it), and here are my impressions.

Packaging:

This packaging is clear, showing the actual Magic Mouse, just like the packaging that Apple has been using recently for the iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iPod touch and accessories.

Downloading the update:

As we posted earlier, you'll want to to download the Wireless Mouse Update to enable the new features of the Magic Mouse, which is available for Snow Leopard and Leopard.

Set Up:

Once you've installed the Wireless Mouse Update, you'll want to go to the Mouse Preference Pane in System Preferences and click the new "Set Up Bluetooth Mouse..." button. You no longer have to use the Bluetooth Setup Assistant to pair, which makes it a little simpler. It will then search for your Magic Mouse, and make sure it's turned on, which is done by a switch on the bottom of the Magic Mouse. Once it's paired, you'll be all ready to use your Magic Mouse.

Read on below to see the how it was using the Magic Mouse....

Engadget gets hands on with Apple's new AirPort Extreme

While I still need to drop $180 to get an AirPort Extreme Base Station for 'review' from Apple, Engadget just put theirs through its paces. Overall, they found that the obvious upsides were Apple's sleek design and easy-breezy setup thanks to the revamped AirPort Admin Utility 5.0. In the drawbacks category, however, were a bizarre lack - in fact a back-step for the AirPort base station - of gigabit ethernet, and less-than-optimal transfer rates, though Engadget concedes your mileage may vary, as it so often does with wireless hardware.

Engadget has also posted a hands-on gallery, which includes their own screenshots of the new Admin Utility. Strangely, they didn't say anything about some of this base station's new found abilities, such as the new AirPort Disk, one of the key features making me count my pennies in anticipation of affording one of these.

Engadget gets their hands all over Apple's new gear

The good folks at Engadget were on the scene reporting from the Apple event today. As such they were able to give the new gear a once over thanks to Apple. They checked out the iTV, a 2GB nano, the new iPod, and the iPod shuffle. Head on over and feel the technolust.

Day 2 with the iPod Radio Remote

So, I've been using the iPod Radio Remote for a full two days now, and I'm still very pleased with the device, but I noticed a few new details that I wanted to share. First off, if your headphones unplug from the Radio Remote while listening to regular tracks, the iPod doesn't pause the track as it does with the regular jack up top. Also, the audio coming out of the iPod's jack is slightly louder than the audio coming out of the Radio Remote. I've found my favorite use for this is to have the headphones plugged into my iPod which is in my inside coat pocket, and then let the Radio Remote dangle down where I clip it to the bottom of my coat for easy control while I'm commuting. Who needs one of those fancy iPod-integrated jackets when you can use one of these?

Hands on with the new iPod Radio Remote

So, yesterday was my birthday, and just like any other good Mac user, I had to drag my wife to the Apple Store before going to dinner. A pre-celebration celebration, if you will.

In any case, they didn't have the new iMacs in yet, but they did have the new Radio Remote for the iPod, so I quickly bought one. I've posted a bunch of pics of the device and its packaging over on my Flickr account, so make sure you check out all the pics.

So far, I've only done minimal tinkering with the device, but here's my mini-review of cool bits I've noticed:
  • If you haven't run the latest iPod update, the Radio Remote will work as a remote, but not as a radio.
  • Clicking on radio and tuning is a snap. Hitting play temporarily "turns off" the radio.
  • The top headphone jack on my 5G iPod continued to work even when I had headphones plugged into the Radio Remote. So, it's not just a radio, it's not just a remote, it's also a way to share your tunes with your friend or loved one by plugging in two headsets (one to the iPod and one to the Radio Remote). Very cool.
  • Station information shows up underneath the station number when listening. As I had it tuned to 92.3 K-Rock in NYC, the text FREE RADIO and BOOKER kept scrolling underneath the radio frequency.
  • The remote is identical to the controls on an iPod shuffle, so I imagine it will have the same easy to control while wearing gloves quality.
  • The included headphones have the smaller stereo plug that comes with the nanos.
  • The headphones plugged into the Radio Remote act as the antenna, so you cannot listen through the top port on your iPod with no headphones attached to the Radio Remote. There's audio, but it is all static.
I'll post more on this later after I really get a chance to put this sucker to the test. I wonder how the battery life is if you are just doing radio 24-7...

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
