T-Mobile to offer Germans unlocked iPhones - at a price

After the news yesterday of T-Mobile being issued a restraining order on iPhone sales in Germany, T-Mobile has announced that an unlocked version of the handset will be available to German customers only. Albeit, it'll set you back €999 - that's US$1,477.97 or £716.

Before you rush out and buy an unlocked handset, you might want to consider the maths. It's just £183 cheaper than the minimum cost of a U.K. iPhone and just under $400 cheaper than an American handset, including the lowest contract term for the locked handsets. Let's not also forget that you'll need some kind of SIM card and network service on top of that thousand euros. We're guessing that an unlocked French iPhone is likely going to set you back an identical figure.

Of course, with this huge premium being demanded, I'm certain that the iHacking talents around will have people begging for more unlocks for the foreseeable future.

Willkomen in Deutschland, iPhone

While poor Nik finishes a restless, cold night in Regent Street, the first European iPhones are already in the hands of eager customers in Köln (Cologne), Germany. Macnotes.de has the pictures and the story from the single-store T-Mobile midnight madness launch; online sales in Germany also commenced at midnight, and retail sales across the rest of the country are scheduled for later today. One bonus for the crowd (estimated at 300 or more) of shoppers at the introduction in Köln -- free pretzels from T-Mobile. Yum!

You can see a reasonable Google translation of the Macnotes page here. To all our German readers and new iPhone owners: Es is ganz toll, das Sie konnen jetzt die iPhone Erfahrung haben; sag uns, wie es geht mit die neuen Super-Handys.

iPhone coming to Germany, again on November 9th

The Guardian newspaper seems to have its sources right, as today sees Steve in Germany to announce the availability of the iPhone there. The 8Gb model will go on sale on 9th November (anyone want to bet against a November 9th launch for France being announced tomorrow?), cost €399 ($553 / £276) and will require a 2-year T-Mobile contract. T-Mobile also points out that "By the end of 2007, T-Mobile will be the only network operator in Germany to offer EDGE throughout its entire GSM network" - at least some European operators are ensuring the data technology is commonplace before offering the iPhone. There's currently no word on how much the monthly contract will cost, but I'm sure we'll hear about that shortly.
