New iMac, Mac mini, MacBook ads spotted

As we and others have posted over the past few days, there is a rumor that a new or redesigned iMac, Mac mini and MacBook models are coming very soon. Now, this week brings reports of Google ads supposedly touting the rumored Mac mini, iMac and MacBook models. These ads have been spotted in several European countries, in Dutch and in a few other languages. They read as follows:

"Apple's Nieuwste MacBook®"
"store.apple.com/nl/macbook Dunner, lichter en krachtiger! Gratis bezorging. Bestel vandaag."

Which translates to:
"Apple's Newest MacBook ®"
"store.apple.com/nl/macbook Thinner, lighter and stronger! Free delivery. Order today. "

"Apple Store: New iMac"
"store.apple.com/nl-store Ultradunne 20 & 24 inch modellen. Vanaf slechts €1099. Apple Store"

Which translates to:
"Apple Store: New iMac"
"store.apple.com/nl-store Ultra thin 20 & 24 inch models. From only € 1099. Apple Store"

"Apple's Nieuwe Mac mini"
store.apple.com/nl-store Sneller en betaalbaarder dan ooit. Vanaf slechts €499. Bestel meeten."

Which translates to:
"Apple's new Mac mini '
store.apple.com/nl-store faster and more affordable than ever. From only € 499. Buy assay. "

Again, this points to yet more reasons why there could be new iMac, Mac mini and MacBook models coming soon. These new models are expected to be released before October 9th, so keep a look out.

Apple Store down, speculation runs wild in the streets for maybe another hour

UPDATE: And we're back with new Xserves, featuring the snazzy (and totally expected) Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor. Check out the specs on the store.

The headline pretty much says it all. We'll pack up our crystal ball and stick with the refresh button until this clears up. Stay tuned!

Note that variable pricing hit iTunes in the wee hours of the East Coast morning.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Shiny new stuff coming to TUAW in 2009

The Macintosh turned 25 last week, but we'll be celebrating all year long. Keep checking back each month for Apple history, giveaways, new features and stories about our Apple gear and what we do with it. We may even have a few pleasant surprises this year...

Coming this February:
  • Giveaways to take your mind off this nasty global economic meltdown. This month we're giving away some business tools (stay tuned). We hope to have something to give away every single month in 2009.
  • New series: The TUAW Bookshelf, a monthly book review about anything from manuals to developer resources to history and cultural books around Apple. Coming in February: iPhone in Action by Christopher Allen and Shannon Applecline (and yes, we have a few copies to give away).
  • New series: One Page of Apps, a roundup of 16 apps in one big review. We realize some of the smaller apps don't require a full post, so we'll keep your RSS clutter-free by doing a few roundups. Look for the debut this week.
  • New series: Road Tested, where we take gear and put it to the test for a month.
  • Guest columns with developers and pundits. Appearing this Spring or sooner.
  • New videos: This Old Apple, a look back at working Apple computers from days gone by. We'll boot up some machines and try some vintage software. Appearing this Spring.

Of course, we've still got our usual lineup of posts, plus Flickr Find, Mac 101, Friday Favorite, First Look, Ask TUAW, Terminal Tips, TUAW Faceoff, interviews, liveblogs and lots more.

A look at Leopard's iTunes visualizers

Mac Rumors has posted screenshots of three new iTunes visualizers coming in Leopard (or sooner, if they're included in the upcoming update). They're called Lathe, Jelly, and Stix-- Lathe is a couple of particle fountains that "pulsate" to the bass notes, Jelly a kalediscope of little colored lights, and Stix (above) is a beam of light that shoots around on what looks like a reflective disco floor.

Seeing just screenshots of these doesn't do it, of course-- the whole thing depends on how well it moves with the music. And I have to say-- I hardly ever use the visualization functions on any mp3 player I've ever had. Sometimes during a party I'll turn it on, but even then eventually people turn it off and start browsing my iTunes collection anyway.

Still, every piece of news about Leopard means we're one step closer to release. New visualizers may just be visualizers, but at least they're new! Just a month left!

New Leopard Build Introduces New Feature, Tweaks

The latest build of Leopard, (9A303) introduced some small but nifty features to the list of enhancements that will ship with the new OS next year. Lets take a look:

  • QuickLook is a new feature which allows users to view a full size preview of any image by right clicking on it, without having to open up the full Preview application.
  • The workflow for creating Dashboard Web Clips has changed. Instead of having to first open Dashboard, users can now create Web Clips directly within Safari.
  • When connecting a new external storage device, Leopard will ask you if would like to use the drive as a Time Machine backup drive.
  • The Spaces switching dialog is now a glossy black.

Small news, but news none the less, and we'll take anything we can get until we see some new announcements from Mr. Jobs himself.

Universal Binary of Flash Player 9 released

Adobe has cranked out a Universal Binary of Flash Player 9 for Intel Mac consumption. Strangely, a PowerPC-only build is still available on the download page, though Insanely Mac is reporting that it's an earlier build.

If you're interested in what's actually new in this latest version, check out Adobe's page with the full details.

Columbia Records & Apple offer exclusive pre-order of Bob Dylan's new album, ticket promo

I guess the times certainly are a changin', as the man Bob Dylan himself has hopped on board with Apple and the iTunes Music Store to offer an exclusive pre-order ($13.99) of his upcoming new album, Modern Times, which lands on August 29th. Ticketmaster has even tossed their hat in, just like with the Red Hot Chili Peppers promo back in April, and is offering a pre-sale ticket opportunity for select dates on Mr. Dylan's tour to fans who pre-order the album.

Now if that isn't enough Bob for you, Apple has also created a digital box set simply called 'The Collection' which boasts 800 songs, but be careful using that one-click purchase option: it's $199, and also lands on the 29th. "Bob Dylan is one of the most respected poets and musicians of our time, and he is a personal hero of mine," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, calling this opportunity a "a real thrill for us."

Modern Times (iTMS link) is available for pre-order today, and fans who purchase it will receive a Ticketmaster code by email which can be used to get in on that pre-sale at Ticketmaster.com starting August 30th, while the tickets go on sale to the public September 9th. More information can be found at bobdylan.com, as well as ticketmaster.com/bobdylan.

VH1's Best Week Ever spoofs the new Mac ads

Hooray for music television stations that do anything but these days: VH1's 'Best Week Ever' has spoofed the new Mac ads, and we have to say: they're pretty darn funny. They might not be safe for work (mild language), but they did a good job of capturing the somewhat pretentious and put-off attitude of 'the Mac'. Enjoy.

Dan Lurie Incoming

Macs are beautiful. Macs are elegant. Macs embody the spirit of technological innovation and cultural progress we find so readily in this exciting period of human history. As we as a civilization explore and find new ways to interact with and manipulate information, we must have tools that allow us to stretch the boundaries of conventional thinking. Since its founding over 30 years ago, Apple has constantly been on the bleeding edge of design, technology, and communication. It is my passion for these things that drive my fascination and love of all things Apple. I want to share that passion with you, and as the newest TUAW team member, that exactly what I'll be doing from now on.

Now, enough with that pseudo-intellectual gobbledygook, time for me to introduce myself. I'm a Graphic Design student in Denver, CO, much like one of my fellow bloggers. Before coming to TUAW, I blogged for The Apple Blog and co-hosted the MacNN Podcast. I eek out my meager existence by fixing Macs and iPods at a local Mac repair shop, as well as the odd design or photography gig on the side. The tools of my trade are my faithful 15" PowerBook, my camera, and my sketchbook. All of which travel everywhere with me in one of my many messenger bags (it will soon be discovered that I'm a horrendous bag geek).

In any case, I'm greatly looking forward to writing for TUAW, and hope I'll be able to provide you all with some quality content.

New TUAW bloggers

Just wanted to take a moment to point out something that some of you may have already noticed. We've enlisted the aid of two new bloggers here on TUAW: Victor Agreda, Jr. and David Chartier. You may know them both from DownloadSquad, and I am sure if you ever bother to read the comments here at TUAW, then you are more than familiar with Victor, who held our top spot in the commenter list in the side bar until yesterday when we enlisted him to blog over here. In any case, make them feel welcome....but not too welcome. Let the new TUAW blogger hazing begin!

Tip of the Day

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.
