Found Footage: Possible video taken by iPhone?

Could this possibly be the first video taken by an iPhone? Over at iPhone Matters, Gregory Ng posts that he received a copy of this video from an Apple Store employee in California. In the video, you can see what appears to be an iPhone appearing on the iMac screen as recorded by its iSight. The video is not the highest quality and Ng writes that the sender compressed the video before sending it over email. What do you think? Real or hoax?

Rest of industry slowly catching on to Apple's music integration approach

RealNetwork's CEO Rob Glaser, always one to fire off a comment when he tricks himself into thinking the industry is listening, might be one of the first major partners of Microsoft to publicly express, erm, 'disappointment' with the Redmond company's all-in-one approach with their Zune music player and service, slated to be delivered... oh I dunno, some day: "We think this a case where our technology competitors, in this case specifically Microsoft, have literally thrown the baby out with the bath water." This might also be the first time Microsoft has been accused of literally throwing out a baby, along with other features and products, such as most of Vista WinFS.

But here's the interesting part: Rob then goes on to threaten (hehe, isn't he cute?) that this gives RealNetworks the opportunity to go find other hardware companies who are "open to integrating tightly with our Rhapsody software platform". Discussion as to whether RealNetworks has even 1 full percentage point of the digital music market aside, it sounds like, after four years, supposed competitors to the iPod + iTunes platform (since when was Microsoft a hardware company?*) are catching on to the possibility that the whole 'integration' strategy Apple uses might actually be a good idea. However, time will have to tell whether this 9th inning enlightenment will pay off for any of these companies.

[* - Microsoft's mice and keyboards (and possibly other peripherals) don't count. Last I heard, they're designed and built by HP.]

VLC 0.8.5 released with Intel Mac, Growl support, many improvements

The most excellent jack-of-many-formats VLC media player has just reached version 0.8.5, and boy  does it pack a whallop - just check out the release notes. The biggest new additions to write home about are Universal Binary support, Growl notifications, a statistics system, new skin support including skins from Winamp 2 (for those who just can't let go), new video filters, support for downloading updates (possibly due to Sparkle?) and a whole lot more.

VLC is a feature-packed media player with support for a boatload of media formats, and is available free for many OSs from VideoLAN.

Napster points finger at Microsoft for iTunes market share

Napster's CEO, Chris Gorog, has pointed a finger at Microsoft for the dominance of the iTunes iPod combination in the digital music market. The frustrated CEO is upset with Microsoft's DRM technology and its relationship with hardware manufacturers, commenting on what many feel is the root of iPod competitors'  problem: “It’s a lot more complex to get organized properly than it is to build one device and one service as Apple has done." While the debate surrounding whether Apple should license their iTunes DRM or open iPod hardware platform has many layers, there is certainly something to be said with how solid Apple is able to build this platform simply because they manage it from start to finish.

Check out the rest of the Reuters article for interviews from both Napster and Real on the state of the digital music market, as well as a humorous prediction from Gorog: "Ultimately, the consumer electronics giants ... are all going to come to this Windows Media party," he said. "This is really going to be the ubiquitous format."

Real Squeezes Silently Back into the iPod

News.com reports that Real is once again iPod compatible, whether Apple wants them to be or not.  According to RealNetworks Chief Strategy Officer Richard Wolpert, "Harmony now supports all shipping iPods, including iPod Photo." While I still hate Real, I think this is cool.

As News.com notes, "Incompatibility between the major download stores and music players has fragmented the digital market. For example, songs purchased from Apple's iTunes store can only be played directly on Apple's iPod, while songs purchased from Napster or Microsoft cannot be played on the iPod." I think this is becoming a bigger problem, as there are too many proprietary formats and too many different consumer-inconveniencing DRM variants.  We need more openness in all this.  I want to buy songs off the iTMS and copy them straight over to both my iPod and my PSP.  Is that so wrong?

Real's Rhapsody

real sucksOriginally, I was going to make this post about Real trying to compete with iTunes and the iPod with the newly announced Rhapsody to Go service, and I was going to point you to read more about it via this Playlist article. Unfortunately, every time I try to reach http://www.rhapsody.com to check it out, Real detects that I am on a Mac and redirects me automatically to their RealPlayer 10 for OS X download page. It is absolutely the most frustrating thing ever.

So instead of writing about Rhapsody to Go, I decided to instead simply say that this is one of the most incredibly stupid and anti-Macintosh web policies I've ever encountered.

UPDATE: Here's the non-discriminatory Google cache of what the pages was supposed to look like as of April 21st. Thanks, Rob!
