iTunes library tool SuperSync half-off today

I haven't run the numbers thoroughly, but there's a team consensus here that iTunes library management and synchronization questions occupy high slots in the top 10 list of frequent questions to Ask TUAW and our tip line. With multiple machines, iPods/iPhones and massive libraries of media, keeping everything shipshape can be a real challenge.

Past posts have discussed several options for sharing and syncing, including products like Syncopation, myTuneSync, TuneRanger and Mojo -- and one item that keeps showing up in the list is SuperSync, mentioned by Mat here. It may not be the most attractive tool for the job, but reports are that it handles the task with aplomb (though it's a good idea to back up your library first).

SuperSync is discounted 50% today via MacZot, at $14.95 for a pair of licenses (allowing you to sync 2 machines); if library cleanup is on your holiday to-do list, it might be a good last-second purchase. We'll aim for a TUAW Faceoff on the various library sync and management tools early in the new year.

SuperSync adds support for TiVo Mp3s

We posted about SuperSync last year, and we just posted about another iTunes library syncing app, Syncopation. But just in case you've been waiting to sync your music libraries not just across iTunes but also to your TiVo, the wait is over -- SuperSync version 2.3 now does just that. You can connect to a shared library with any series 2 or series 3 TiVo, and even use the remote to browse and play music.

And of course, SuperSync will still let you do all the other stuff other sync tools will let you do -- browse multiple libraries and copy music between each, transfer whole playlists, and even browse and play music over the 'net. A two-machine license (the app has to be running on both computers you use the transfer the music to and from) costs $29.

TiVo support is all well and good, but I can haz Xbox 360 support, too? Connect360 is great, and Rivet seems interesting, but if we could roll up the sync tool and the sharing tool into one app, all the better.

SuperSync: iTunes Library Syncing

SuperSync is a cross-platform application that allows you to sync two separate iTunes libraries. I actually have this problem as I am planning to set up some kind of central home music server, but my family has a couple of separate libraries. Unfortunately, there are a lot of duplicate songs between the libraries, so just mashing them together is not really feasible. SuperSync allows you to compare the two libraries and only copy over what missing. In addition to the syncing function, SuperSync allows you to access your music library from across the internet, e.g. accessing a home computer while on the road or at work.

SuperSync is available for Mac and Win (and, to be frank, it shows). Licenses come in multi-packs, temporarily on sale for $29.00 for two.

[Edit: I've heard some reports about problems with this software. As always if you try any software of this sort, be sure to backup!]

Tip of the Day

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.
