New Aussie, Swiss Apple Store openings

We've been inundated with emails today talking about the two international Apple Store openings.

The first new store is in Zurich, Switzerland. Reader Greg sent us a link to his Flickr gallery with plenty of documentation of the new Bahnhofstrasse store. Here's a pic of part of the huge crowd just before the opening:

Dang, Greg -- looking at those photos makes me want to go back to Zurich again, especially now that there are two Apple Stores!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, another Apple Store will be opening in a few short hours in Melbourne, Australia. The new Doncaster store appears to be a wide-body layout in a mall, and is the second Melbourne store. We're hoping to get pictures from our friends down under as soon as the opening occurs. Here's a photo taken on Friday (yesterday in Melbourne) of the store prior to the opening:

We'd love to hear comments from readers who attended either of the openings, just to see how many Macs, iPods, and iPhones were flying out the doors. Were there any cool freebies or giveaways?

Geneva Apple Store opening photos

As promised, the Apple Store on Rue de Rive in Geneva, Switzerland opened this morning, and TUAW reader Sylvain is on the spot and sending in some great pictures. From the looks of it, the place is packed, the weather is great and everyone is having a good time.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting for two Zurich stores to open; one in the Glattzentrum shopping mall and one on Bahnhofstrasse.

If you happen to visit this store today or over the weekend, please let us know! We'd love to hear your stories and see your own shots. Have fun, Geneva!

Switzerland Apple Stores near completion

The Apple retail machine continues to move, this time across Switzerland, as three stores are nearly ready. ifoAppleStore reports that the store in Zurich's Glattzentrum shopping mall should be in business any time now, and they've posted some tantalizing spy shots.

A second store is scheduled to open in Zurich on Bahnhofstrasse by year's end. Job postings for these locations began to appear on Apple's job board as early as last February.

Finally, a third store on Rue de Rive (Geneva) is scheduled to open later this month.

iPhone news for Switzerland, Spain and Poland

Here's some good news for people in Switzerland, Spain, Poland who are awaiting iPhones. According to Fortune, all three countries may sell them soon.

Earlier this week, Le Matin Online reported (linked page is in French) that Swisscom will be the official iPhone carrier for Switzerland. Coincidentally, Apple is rumored to be opening an Apple Store in Zürich in July of this year (we first heard rumors of a Zürich store in 2006).

Likewise, France Telecom stated their intention to extend coverage to "...more than just two countries" via their CFO Gervais Pellissier. As the largest European countries that still lack a carrier, Poland and Spain are obviously attractive to France Telecom.

In related news, French iPhone customers can expect no immediate changes, as France Telecom intends to remain the country's exclusive carrier for the next two years.

To all the TUAW readers in Switzerland, Spain and Poland ... we've got our fingers crossed for you! Let us know if you hear anything from your local news outlets.

Swiss Macworld Expo Cancelled

Back in February we mentioned that Macworld Expo was coming to Switzerland. Unfortunately, German language Mac site macprime is reporting (German) that the show has been cancelled. It seems that not enough exhibitors were interested. Sorry, Swiss Mac-lovers, you're always welcome at WWDC or MWSF; according to Google Maps, you just have to "swim across the Atlantic Ocean."

Thanks, Steve!

Macworld Expo returns to Switzerland

After many years, MacWorld Expo is set to return to Switzerland. TUAW reader Steve pointed us the news over at MacPrime. My German is pretty schreklich, but it sounds like May 22th is the day to be looking forward to in Zürich. German-speaking readers, please feel free to jump in and translate the article for us and let us know what's up on the Macworld.ch front.

Thanks Steve

Zürich Apple Store all but confirmed

According to the Apple blog MacPrime (which is based in Switzerland), the only thing missing from this deal is the official announcement from Apple. It seems that the Benetton store (wow, I haven't seen one of those in a long time) at Bahnhofstrasse 77 will be the Apple Store's new home. According to TUAW reader Greg, who lives in Zürich, "...that location is one of the busiest spots in the heart of the city. I don't think there is anything more expensive than that. It's got a very luxurious touch, surrounded by watch- and department stores."

Sounds perfect. Let us know when construction begins!
