Apple opened a new retail store in San Antonio, Texas earlier today, number 14 for the Lone Star State. As usual, we asked any TUAW readers who may have attended to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt!
If you haven't gone down to the store yet, grab your camera and add anything especially interesting to our Flickr pool!
Apple is about to open their 14th retail store in Texas -- San Antonio's second -- this Saturday, June 28th. Apple Store North Star is located in the North Star Mall, next to Ann Taylor. You can get full driving directions here. The doors open at 10:00 AM. Two stores is pretty good, San Antonio, but Houston still has you beat with three.
This store is pretty narrow at only 34 feet wide. Aren't things supposed to be bigger in Texas?
As noted earlier tonight, there seems to be at least one iPhone in the wild. TUAW is pleased to bring you this exclusive video from our agent-on-the-spot Mikal. Today, Stan Sigman, CEO of AT&T Wireless (Cingular), was the commencement speaker at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. Sigman, who is a 1970 grad, gifted WTAMU president Dr. J. Patrick O'Brien with what appears to be the "first iPhone in Texas".
Mikal's friend shot this footage on his Treo. The sound is a bit hard to follow but you can hear the bit about the iPhone if you listen carefully. Canyon, Texas is home to about 12,000 people--most of whom would love to receive a free iPhone but apparently only about .0083% of the town got their wish today.
"This next ?announcement? may interest you more than anything...(unintelligible)...The first ?regulation? iPhone in the state of Texas is in the hands of Dr. O'Brien of West Texas A&M University. (applause) So, if you don't remember a word I've said and someone asks you about your graduation, you can say...(unintelligible)"
Update: TUAW Reader John A of WTAMU sent in this much better video. Thank yous to John A, Mikal and Mikal's friend.
Two new Apple Stores opened this weekend, one in Florida and one in Colorado. As usual, we want any TUAW operatives in the area to send us their stories and pictures. So, how is it going? Did you get out to the store? Let us know!
TUAW reader, and Texan, Jason sent us a few photos he took of what will soon be Texas' latest Apple Store. It's located in Webster's Baybrook Mall, between Coldwater Creek and a place called Bags N Baggage (We're guessing that they sell bags). A quick look at Apple's jobs postings site revealed that a few retail positions are still available for this location.
We aren't aware of a time table for this store, but we'll keep our eyes peeled.
Apple Store The Domain, Texas' newest location, opened a day early on Thursday (what they call a "soft opening" in the biz). It's a 45' store with no cash registers. Shoppers check out with any employee holding the requisite handheld device (which we've seen at other locations). How convenient.
As usual, we've asked any TUAW operatives who may visit the store this weekend to share their reports and/or pictures. So, did you go, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments. Here's hoping you scored a T-shirt.
While you're there, show your love and set the display Macs internet homepages to TUAW!
Upon reading our post about the opening of the newest Texas Apple Store, TUAW reader Dave grabbed his camera and headed down to the shopping center. He snapped the photo above for us, as well as another he's got posted at his site.
Not that we condone covertly photographing unopened Apple Stores. But thanks, Dave! We appreciate the shots.

Metropolitan
Baptist Church Pastor Sal Sberna of Houston, TX has been delivering a series of four "iPod Theology" sermons
that focus on the simplicity of the iPod. Sal said that his intention is to tap into the pool of millions of iPod
owners, who represent a potentially huge audience for his church.
"The reason the outside of the
iPod is so simple to use and so beautiful to look at is because of the way they designed the inside of the iPod,"
said Sberna. "All you do on the outside is push the little button, drive the wheel and pick what
usefulness you want out of your iPod, and so when Jesus talks to us about simplification, it must start on the
inside." If you've had any doubts about the iPod's far-reaching appeal, consider them squashed.
Kudos to the pastor for trying to reach a younger audience by embracing some current technology. He says he hopes to
one day make his sermons available as podcasts.
According to
Apple Retail watchdog site ifoAppleStore, Houston, Texas and Providence, Rhode Island may have brand
new Apple Stores in their respective futures. First, they suggest that Houston's second Apple Store will appear at the
Memorial City Mall, bringing Texas' tally of Apple Stores to seven.
In Rhode Island, it looks like Apple
has finalized plans for a location in the Providence Mall. Good luck to locals of both locations. We hope these plans
come to fruition. For those of you in southern New England, don't pass up Ye Olde English Fish and Chips in Woonsocket, RI while on your way
to the Providence Mall. That place is fantastic.
