Microsoft axes Virtual PC for Mac

Virtual PC will never be Universal, it turns out that Microsoft decided to kill the Mac version of Virtual PC instead. Macworld reports that while there will be no Universal version current customers will still receive support.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of the news that VMware will be coming to the Mac. It always pains me when a large company decides to stop development on a Mac product but I can see where Microsoft is coming from on this one, they just want you to buy a license for Windows and who cares if you are running Boot Camp, Parallels, or VMware.

Virtual PC goes free - but not for Mac OS X

Good news everyone: Microsoft has released Virtual PC into the wild for free - but not for 'the rest of us'. That's right: an announcement on a MSDN blog (Microsoft Developer Network) has released Virtual PC 2004 as a free download for Windows users, and it offers details of VPC 2007 along the lines of support for Vista and improved performance over version 2004 (who on Earth thought it was a good idea to use years as a versioning system?). Of course, there isn't even an ETA that Microsoft can start delaying for version 2007, so we're guessing around 2010/2011 for the new version.

This move makes sense in light of Parallels making headlines virtually overnight (pun intended), sparking what seems like a renewed interest in the virtualization market.

Microsoft: "Still discussing" Virtual PC for Intel Macs

Windows is a necessary evil for many people in the corporate world, but those of us lucky enough to be able to use Macs at work have been able to get away with running Virtual PC (VPC), which runs the Windows OS in emulation. But will Microsoft continue to develop VPC for the new Intel Macs? According to MacMinute, the jury is still out. In a statement issued earlier today, Microsoft said,

"The Mac BU recognizes the need for the product and believes it is the best virtualization solution for PowerPC users, so it is committed to providing Virtual PC to new and existing PowerPC customers. However, Microsoft is still discussing with Apple the feasibility of bringing Virtual PC for Mac to Intel-based Macs in the future and has not made any announcements about if/how the product might work on the new machines."

Keep your fingers crossed (I think, right?). You wouldn't want to give up your Mac at work.
