Dvorak likes the Mac mini, in theory

Dvorak

John Dvorak isn’t what you would call an Apple ‘fan.’ He predicts the death of Apple more often than some people change socks. He often raises the ire of the Mac press, even tuaw.com’s very own picture of patience, Barb, has been irritated by some of Dvorak’s choicer words about Apple.

This may be one of the signs of the impending Apocalypse but this is what Dvorak had to say about the Mac mini in his most recent Marketwatch article, ‘Once this unit gets into the field and passes the tests of the real world, I’ll have no trouble recommending it as a machine of choice, especially to new users. And I haven’t done that with an Apple product for years.’

All is not sunshine and lollipops in the article though, he does raise some valid points about heat exhaust and whether the market is ready for this small a machine.

John, are you feeling alright? I wouldn’t want this sudden wave of common sense to overpower you.

Why do we care about John Dvorak? He has been wrong too many times!

You know what's really sad about his review? He talks for a long time about a theoretical heat problem (my guess, it's going to be no hotter than an equivalent PowerBook), and completely ignores real problems with the Mac Mini, like it's dearth of RAM. Like others, I too wonder if Dvorak's blessing is the kiss of death for the Mac Mini. Or maybe he just got tired of being wrong.

Umm... the thing that gets me about all of this is that... umm... John hasn't actually used one of these yet, right? How the hell does he know that it runs hot? Because he's basing his comparison on the Cube's heat dissipation issues (not sure where he gets that, I have a Cube and it's been fine in the 4 years I've had it - no heat problems)... I'm not sure how relevant that is in 2005. I'm not sure how relevant JCD is, full-stop. Nice that he's advancing the cause of theoretical reviews of products, it'll make life a lot easier for journalists, who will no longer have the hassle of actually having to get ahold of the thing they want to review... that new Mercedes kicks a**! I haven't driven it yet but the ad for it looks like it just handles so well!

I have been a serious Mac head since the early 90's (through their darkest times), I remember when he used to write for Mac User, and I remember many of his rants over the years with other computer magazines. He has been very anti-apple since he left mac user. He has predicted the faliure of so many things that went on to be great, such as the iMac & iPod. He is / was never right. This praise from him for the Mac mini only tells me one thing; It will fail.
