Linux geek takes a shine to OS X
Jim Lynch of Extremetech has
come out of the Mac closet. He’s a hardcore
Linux user who was long and secretly tempted by the Macintosh. When he finally broke down, unable to resist the siren
call that is OS X, he went whole hog and ordered a dual-processor G5 system. Talk about diving in!
His article details his experiences as a Mac newbie: likes, dislikes, and wish lists. Overall, he gives the Mac a
glowing review and, by the end is taking Mac-bashing trolls like
John Dvorak to task. Good writing and a fun read.

alright, i know that this is supposed to be some sort of n00b simulation of the mac experience, but this guy complains about very simple interface "issues." there are more than "one or two ways" to accomplish simple tasks. For example, to rename a file or folder on the desktop, all you have to do is...hm...HIT ENTER or DOUBLE-CLICK on the NAME. Or go to info and change it. Or do whatever he said. I use xp on my two home computers and am happy with the os, but even the emacs at school are easier to use and far more stable. For an "advanced" Linux user to not be able to adapt to osx is...well...a bad example of the ease of use of the system. switchers heed my warning and ignore this longwinded review.

All my UNIX commands still work (for the most part). I can develop applications easily enough. I can run samba or CUPS if I want to. Though you may think a large percentage of Switchers are Windows people, you'd probably be surprised at how many are UNIX geeks. I happen to know a certain FreeBSD core member who just adores his new iBook!
