Playlist Magazine takes the Sonos for a spin and gets an earful!
Thanks to Dan for letting us know that Playlist recently posted their
review of the Sonos Digital Music System.
Their findings? Very few flaws or concerns to report. The Sonos appears to be intuitive, well designed both
aestethically and mechanically, loads of fun to use… and worth every penny of it’s price (which isn’t cheap).
If you are looking for high-quality audio, wireless convenience, ease of use and the kind of flexibility that isn’t
found in Apple’s own Airport Express w/ AirTunes and the handful of
other devices that perform similarly, it sounds like the Sonos system offers “the whole-house-music thing done
right.”
I’m a bad candidate for things like this because I don’t listen to a lot of music at home and when I do, it’s already
whole-house broadcasting since the “whole house” is a stereo-typical, tiny NYC apartment! If I had more rooms,
though, I’d be all over this thing :)
I’m curious…how many of you use devices like the Sonos in your homes for
listening to music? If you do, what do you use now and would you consider switching to the Sonos, considering the
price?

I really love the Sonos system. I've been following its progress for the last few months and I just with I had 1000 bucks to buy it already. My only worry about the product would be that I fully expect Apple to extend the capabilities of airport express and probably end up with something quite similar to this (and with video capabilities as well). Apple's solution will probably tie in closely with iTunes (and play iTMS DRM-ed AAC), which will make it more compelling for many consumers. But i hope Sonos is very successful because I really like their approach to digital music in the home.

I deliberately got the wireless-free version. Wireless Ethernet has real-world speeds far below the nominal 11 ot 54Mbps, and I don't trust it to carry full-rate 1.2Mbps data streams without dropping frames and otherwise degrading sound quality with jitter and drop-outs.
