10.3.8 update sets off Mac fans... literally

OS X Software Update

Both the Apple discussions board and Macintouch reports issues with G5 fans after updating to 10.3.8. The fans appear to spontaneously rev up quite loudly at as-yet-undetermined times - one reader reports fan revving during bootup, another during Entourage mail check, even one reported revving fans while scrolling in Safari.

So there seems to be some association of fan revving with application usage across the board, perhaps. Has anyone who updated seen this?

(Thanks to Michael for the tip!!)

i have too had this issue, and wondered what the hell it was, since i've never heard my g5 do that, EVER. for me it happened when i was importing a cd into itunes, and trying to run virtual pc at the same time. i hope they fix this.

I haven't had the fans blow really hard since I updated, but yesterday night and this morning, the fan sound, while relatively low, was pulsating for a short while with a period of 2-3 seconds, which is kind of annoying.

I am having the same problem with a Rev B G5 2Ghz DP. The fan runs fast for 4 or 5 secs when I start an application, or when I scroll down a web page fast with the scroll wheel. Hopefully, they will fix it soon.

When it says "G5" does that include the iMac G5 or is this limited to just the Power Macs?

MacFixIt mentioned that setting the processor performance to "Highest" rather than "Automatic" in System Preferences/Energy Saver/Options fixes it and it worked for me - I guess some of those who don't notice any fan effect from 10.3.8 may already have this preference set to "Highest". I don't understand why the fans would need to run more at "Automatic" than at "Highest" though! I guess Apple may eventually fix this in Tiger.

If anything I've seen fan reving decrease significantly since the update. The machine is much quieter. Its a dual 2.5ghz.
