Podcasting: Do you dig it?

podcastAlicia Bankhofer has a nice article up at ipodlounge about podcasting: what it is, why it’s interesting, and how to find some podcasts to check out (for info on how to make a podcast, see Glenn Fleischmann’s recent piece and the original Engadget podcasting how-to).

My question for you, dear readers, is: are you down with the podcasting craze, or does it drive you crazy? We are looking into gearing up for some audio-induced mayhem of the podcasting variety here on TUAW, and we’d love to know your thoughts. What would you like to hear in a podcast?

Yup...I am into it. I have gotton into the habit of either throwing the files onto the iPod every morning or just clicking and listening to the streaming file on my desktop. It started with Adam's (Adam Curry's) Daily Source Code and have added a few more along the way. Some are good some bad, but there are more to choose from everyday. When you find something that interests you...it becomes as addictive as bad reality TV. Have fun with podcasting...be patient, there should be something that will make it worth your while. I encourage a TUAW podcast...good luck!

Been going into serious withdrawal for the Engadget podcast, the first I ever listened to. Since then I've been following several and started one of my own. The medium has a lot of potential, as Phil and others have shown, and TUAW could probably put together a pretty good one. If nothing else, you can listen to podcasts in situations where reading weblogs is problematic, like driving to work, walking the dog, or even just doing the dishes. (Word of warning: if you're going to become a podcast addict, make sure your spouse or significant other has something to keep him/her occupied...) To Marcus Vorwaller and others who think podcasting is already past its prime, I'd like to point out that it's less than a year old and still has huge reserves of untapped potential. As with all 'net phenomena, I'll believe it's jumped the shark when there are lots of mediocre people being paid to do it.

I definitely want to do one. It's like homebrew pirate radio, but easier! And, y'know, more *digital*.

I think podcasting has seen its heyday and is already dying down. I think it's too much effort for the casual blogger to produce a good podcast that people will listen to. I'm sure that a faithful few will stick around for quite awhile, but I don't think it will be everything it's been hyped up to be.

I have been listening to podcasts for some time now. And I think podcasting is very valuable. For the consumer and for the 'broadcaster' as some content I just don't have time for otherwise.. Sure the content is sketchy at times but there are some *great* 'casts while some are just ho hum. That's typical of emerging mediums and the content quality will get better. I'd love to see TUAW put something out there! Please. I'll subscribe!

Ditto PXlated. I view podcasting the same way I do blogging - or any distributed media for that matter. Just because there's a lot out there, doesn't mean that it's good.

The only podcasts I've listened to were those by Phil Torrone and Lynn Pryor (sp) for Engadget. I thought they were great and waiting eagerly for each new episode. Unfortunately, they haven't made one since 29th December of last year. :-(

First of all i LOVE this blog and am exciting that you're getting into podcasting. I've got one myself over at http://www.frontporchpodcast.com Anyway, there are a LOT of mac podcasts out there, so I'd be interested to see how you make something distinctive. Most of the existing ones have some variation on reciting mac news that you can read online. Obviously you guys have some great content, so moving some of that to a podcast is cool but honestly not that special. Focusing on content and style that can't be seen online is the best. How about involving more Mac testimonials from users about HOW they're using certain apps or hardware? Interviews with mac retailers or employees about what it's like to be party of the Apple family? well those are just a few ideas. much success to you and keep up the good work!! You've made one pc switcher very happy.

I love ITconversations but 99.9% of all the rest are uninteresting. A boring waste of time and bandwidth. :-) Just because you can podCast doesn't mean you should.
