New iPod lineup somewhat expected
Available immediatey from the
Apple Store, 4GB iPod mini for
the “magic price point” of $199, and new 6GB iPod mini for $249. Even the colors (silver, green, blue, pink) are bolder
than they were yesterday. The iPod photo lineup now offers a new slim
30GB model, for just $349, a new 60GB model for the low-low price of $449 and a new optional iPod Camera Connector for
$29 that lets you (finally!) connect your digital camera to the iPod photo and import your photos directly into the
iPod. The iPod Camera connector is expected to ship in march.
No bluetooth. No color screen upgrades for all iPod models. You guys didn’t really think THAT was going to happen did you?
Am I the only one thrilled to see they did away with that hideous bronze iPod mini?
Now go finish your cereal before it gets soggy.

Whoa. I just check the "SALES" section of the Apple Store and check it out. They are selling off the "old" iPod photo models at a pretty competitive discount. $379 for the 40 Gig model. And $479 for the 60 Gig model.
But when I saw the 60 Gig model in the "SALE" area, I wondered why? I mean, what's the difference between the "old" model and the "new" one?
The answer is: LESS!
Look at what you get with the old iPod photo models:
6.4 ounces
2.4 x 4.1 x .75 inches
Apple Earphones
AC Adapter
FireWire cable
USB 2.0 cable
iPod photo AV cable
iPod photo Dock
Carrying Case
Look what you get in the "new" models:
Includes
Apple Earphones
AC Adapter
USB 2.0 cable
Here goes Apple again! Giving us less & charging us less, but making it all seem like we're getting more. Is that real? No more Firewire cable?!? USB 2.0 only? And what about the dock? And the case?

I'm not sure what to make of the new mini's. The colours look more vibrant, but also more plastic and cheap imho. the older one's had a sort of metallic look. Also, i was really, really looking forward to a colour screen. I might still buy one tho, 18 hours battery is nice.

Where'd you find a price for the upcoming iPod Camera Connector? Do you have any other details about it?
John: I'm kinda pissed you bought a shuffle too.

Did anyone else notice that there's no more 40Gb "normal" iPod on sale in the store? Just the 20Gb.
This kinda suck.
As usual Apple manage to put a new series out as soon as i buy something. It happened with the powerbook (as soon as i got my TiBook they released the one with 1ghz cpu and superdrive) and with the 2nd Generation 10gb iPod (they upgraded the size like 2 weeks later).
That's starting to get a little annoying ;)
At least this time they didn't cut the price of what i just bought.
And, Pedro, the shuffle can be cool, but i'm starting to think it's actually just a advertising thing: i went 4 times to the NY apple store and 2 times to the chicago store in 12 days and they ALWAYS were out of stock, both for the 512 and the 1024. I ended up buying a 20gb, so i guess the advertising worked...

John, I don't recall being notified about your plans to purchase a shuffle so yes, I'm pretty pissed, too. How could you do this? ;-P
Well, no Bluetooth iPod yet, eh? A girl can still dream...
I might consider returning the 4GB mini I bought last week to either get $50 back or upgrade to the 6GB version, but... I'm really busy and I'm not terribly excited about the prospect so then again I might not. I hate returning things - I am every company's dream consumer. Regardless - I dig my 4GB mini and don't feel cramped for space for what I'm using it for: pulling down what's new from podcasts and my current exhaustive digitizing of all the CDs in the "second tier" of my music library that didn't get digitized in the first great wave of iPod nirvana.

Marcello, go to the Apple Store and go to the "Special Deals" area. They are selling the "old" iPod photos at decent discounts and they come with more extras--dock, case, FireWire cable, etc.--than the new ones.
The iPod photo 40 Gig model is now $379.00 (orig. $499)
The iPod photo 60 Gig model is now $479.00 (orig. $599)
Quite a decent deal. I don't necessarily need an iPod photo, but I have always wanted a 60 Gig iPod so I just snagged one of them.
Get them while they last.
