New Mac Palmtop on the Horizon?
I’m not one who usually traffics in rumors,
but this post over at
O’Grady’s Powerpage has piqued my interest. I remember debating purchasing Apple’s emate 300 (pictured to the
right), but instead opting for a Palm. Rumor has it that Apple is working on a new slick palmtop to go with its current
trend of minis. The post goes on to note: ”Sources who claim to have see one have commented to the PowerPage that an
internal planning spec details that the new machines runs a stripped-down flavor of Mac OS X. We’re told that it will
finally utilize Apple’s Inkwell technology to ‘write anywhere’ and neatly fold into your pocket.”
I’m envisioning a little white plastic laptop a fourth the size of my 12-inch Powerbook. I want it. I want it now.

I dont believe Apple will ever again build a PDA, what Im waiting for is something the size of Sharp Moebius. Thats why I dont get the "stripped down OS X" thing.

I always have to laugh when people take a look at handheld sales and say things like "The PDA market is dead" and "There's no room for a handheld because even the big players are failing." So why did this "No Market" comment make me laugh? Two Reasons: 1) Take all the current Newton users and all the Mac users that say they want an Apple PDA, and you could make a market out of that right there! 2) When Apple entered the Digital Music Player market with the iPod, it was stagnent even more so than the current PDA market. NOBODY was making money, then the iPod comes along and revitializes the market. This is not to say that I think Apple will do this, I've always been a believer that Apple will never re-release another PDA, unless it's running OS-X and come in the smaller iBook with no optical drive coming in at 1/2 inch thin. Oh well, no need to get our hopes up...

(Which I, of course, said repeatedly about the Mac mini...) (But no, really, this really isn't going to happen. There ain't no market for it, buster.)
March 08 2005 at 6:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk, "stripped down version of OS X" doesnt sound like Steve Jobs to me, but if something like that ever comes to production follow my smoke trail to an apple store

March 08 2005 at 1:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am really excited by the rumour and i hope its more than that. But with the company doing well and the PDA market struggling i dont think apple would come out with this even if its in development. If it is though sign me up. I would hope that it has a built in camera, ipod capabilities and the same form factor of the OQO.
March 08 2005 at 1:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHmmmm, do you think apple would actually come out with an ibook MINI? Considering that apple is stretching the line down-wards, it make some sense that laptops would be next on the list. A "stripped down version of OSX" however has been always what is to be rumored on these machines. Apple doesn't like to compromise. My guess is that a device like this would be OSX all the way or nothing. Adding a feature limited version (what features would they pull out?) would only make sense if they were making something like a PDA, not an inexpensive laptop, and you know apple and PDAs.
