Apple Gets on Board with Blu-ray Disc

blu-rayThis story is all over the place, and I’m proud to be the absolute last to mention it: Apple has joined the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Board of Directors. In the official press release Jobs notes: ”Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD. . . . Consumers are already creating stunning HD content with Apple’s leading video editing applications like iMovie HD and are anxiously awaiting a way to burn their own high def DVDs.” As Blu-ray Discs hold 25GBs of data on single-layer disks and 50GBs on double-layer disks, I sure hope Steve starts amping up the hard drive space across the entire Apple line of products. More on this here, here, and here.

Am I the only one who thinks the next DVD disk standard should be named Manta-ray?

In that case it would be interesting to how Apple will implement Blu-ray into future products, I definitely can't imagin them suddenly dropping DVDs like they did for floppy discs, they're simply too popular. I guess it would first appear in the powermacs and slowly make it's way down. I wonder if they'll develop a drive that does BD/DVD/CD or first add two drives and eventually combine them. And then when will they start adding them in? Time will tell I guess, all we know is Apple likes to push new technology forward. :-/

This is what I'm looking forward to: http://www.blu-ray.com/images/media/sony.jpg Nice, sealed discs, immune to scratches and dust! I've had far too many DVD-Rs and CD-Rs (not to mention commercially pressed discs) go bad because of scratches. Nope, I'm GLAD Apple went with Blu-ray instead of HD. But in case you don't want such a thing, you don't have to have one. From the FAQ: http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#1.10 "...the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and TDK have successfully developed a new hard-coating technology dubbed "Durabis" that makes the discs even more resistant to scratches and fingerprints than existing DVDs, without requiring a cartridge to protect the discs. This development will enable manufacturers to downsize PC drives and lower their overall media production costs." As for DVD compatibility, check here: http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#2.4 "Will Blu-ray support playback of DVDs? Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. Although it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with CDs and DVDs."

Noooo! >_< Well it makes sense I guess, expensive brand with expensive product (in a jokey sort of way don't pounce on me please?). Well the Blu-ray and HD-DVD both have valid points though I would perfer the cheap backwards compatible HD-DVD, but I can always buy an external one if needed. Still I wonder how long it will take for the dust to settle and reveal the clear winner of this formats war.
