Tiger to bring rotation to a monitor near you

Tiger is on everyone’s minds at the moment. When will be it released? How much will it cost? What cool features, other than what has already been shown, will be included?

I can’t help with the first two questions, though I think it will be released fairly soon and I bet it’ll cost $129, but I have a solid answer for the last question: monitor rotation.

Observe:

Tiger Tiger Rotating Bright

It seems that Apple was showing off the new monitor preference which allows you to rotate the screen at NexPo 2005, a newspaper conference. With a nice big Cinema Display you will be able to see an entire page of a broadside digitally without having to scroll.

Very cool.

This is all unconfirmed, so don’t coming crying to me if it isn’t included in the final release of Tiger, I’m just one man after all.

Just to "confirm" Or is that "anti-confirm"? This is not a "feature" of Tiger, AFAIK. The ability to rotate is in the Video Card and the monitor. There's been a discussion on this for the past few weeks over at MacInTouch about doing this with a Dell Monitor. Admittedly, I could be wrong, but MacBidoulle ain't known for their accuracy.

Wouldnt this allow all macs to use this cool feature including mini macs? And would this also work on Nvidia GPUs? this could be quite cool

I always wondered why they didn't at least allow the screens on the G4 iMacs to rotate. Would make reading full page pdf's a lot easier. Maybe with a little bit of muscle and an instant void of my warranty, I'll be able to make use of this Tiger feature on my old 17" iMac.

All Macs with Radeon cards that support screen rotation--virtually all Radeon cards suport this--have been able to do this for years using ATI's control panel. Try it out. It's neat. And Tiger is not needed.

All nvidia chipset based cards on PC have been able to do this for a couple of years. Started when the Tablet PC came out.

Two thoughts: 1) I really hope this isn't a "premium" feature for Apple's monitors. 2) Won't we lose sub-pixel rendering, since pixels on an LCD are arranged horizontally? Or if we don't lose it, wouldn't resolution instead be increased in the vertical dimension?

Yeah! We are one more step closer to having our modern rendition of the Newton! Screen rotation was one of the things that made the Newton so handy. I know, i know......but I can wish, can't I? Seriously though, we are not far away from having at least the resources to do such a thing as I discussed in my blog. Jonesblog
