Silly Survey Sunday: What's in a name?

powercube hd iconWhenever I get a new Mac, one of the first things I do is change the name of Macintosh HD to something with a bit more personality and Laurie A. Duncan's Computer (the network sharing name) to something that more uniquely identifies that particular machine. I used to name my Macs after my unborn children (Zach and Zoe), but once it became clear that I would always have more computers than kids, I ditched that naming scheme. Now I pretty much just pick names based on nothing but whim.

Since I think anthropomorphising computers is cool, I have a burning desire to know... What's your Mac's name? Do you name only the hard drive(s) or do you spend hours deciding on what name you want your Mac known as on your network?  Almost as important - is your Mac male, female, or gender-neutral?

My machines have have some really odd names. My current 12" PBook is named Vera, while its 250GB LaCie External drive is named Juris. My 3rd Gen 20GB iPod is named BeatBox, while my 512MB Shuffle is named BoomStick. My WinBox is called Satan, while its 2 drives are called Devil and Lucifer. Now I just need a name for my Nano that should be here any day now.....

I don't have that many devices ;-) I'm more sistematic, using buyer.model to identify them ;-) So, my computer's jdsant.PBG4, and my father's jdgarc.iMacG4 For disk drives, I always try to use names without spaces, because it's easier to navigate them with cd in the Terminal ;-) Besides, in pre-OS X days it was a security measure not to have your volumes with common names. Nowadays, the startup volume is always / ;-)
