Future of Spotlight

spotlight iconLooks like my take on Spotlight as an OS-integrated version of QuickSilver is quite possibly dead wrong.  Kottke discusses some interesting comments in a Slashdot thread in his recent post, The Future of Spotlight and OS X. The majority of the discussion is based upon comments by a supposed Apple employee, but they also make a lot of sense. There is indication of Apple moving away from the Finder and the entire Finder metaphor within their OS towards a more meta-cognitive Spotlight-based interface where the user is able to create relationships between various bits of information and files on the computer. There's even discussion of releasing GPS-capable Powerbooks.

Which do you think will make it to market first: a G5 Powerbook or a GPS-capable Powerbook?

Anyway, the idea of moving away from finder is not a day to late. I belive more relation and situation based organisations of your files is the future. I mean right now, the tree hierarcy is about the only way - that really limiting.

I think the GPS is a bit far fetched myself. I expect that the G5 is a bit more probable.

Last time I read up on it, GPS doesn't work inside buildings. This would make GPS in most machines pretty much worthless. Even laptops usually get used indoors.

Small Paul

Er... what does GPS have to do with Spotlight? Can I search for "Small Paul" on my PowerBook, and get a massive spotlight shined on me from an Apple satellite? Steve, if you're reading: please make this happen.

I think it's going to be GPS. It's such a great thing for Apple to do to showcase Spotlight. The only reason(I think) that handheld-GPS units haven't gotten smaller is because of the human aspect: We can't stand using something the size of a credit card. Factor in the fact that we've been waiting for a G5 PB for a long time and they're still having problems with power & heat, and it looks like GPS will beat it to market.
