Porn Mode (or How to Hack your Safari Menus)

Our readers are always good. Sometimes, they are friggin' great! Earlier, I made a crack about Safari's new Private Browsing feature being equivalent to a special "Porn Mode." One especially gifted reader made my joke a reality:
porn mode
Thanks, Josh! Read on after the jump to find out how Josh did it so that you can make your own Porn Mode.

The requirements:  Tiger and Developers Tools (also known as Xcode on the Tiger DVD; you'll have to install this separately) installed.  I also recommend that you make a backup copy of Safari before you begin.

Here's the steps as emailed to me by Josh:
  1. Right-click on Safari(.app) and click on "Show Package Contents"
  2. Follow the trail to Contents > Resources > English.Iproj > MainMenu.nib
  3. Double-click MainMenu.nib to open Interface Builder.
  4. Click on the "Safari" test menu that pops up, and double-click on "Privacy Browsing".
  5. Replace it with "Porn Mode" :)
  6. File > Save.. and restart Safari.
You're done.  Enjoy your new hacked copy of Safari, featuring Porn Mode.

Its just not complete until you edit the dialog box as well. While you're in there changing the menu, open up the Localizable.strings file and change the rest. Its a plain text file, so you can use your favorite text editor on it. Search for the following to change the dialog box title: /* title for Private Browsing confirmation alert */ Change the value on the RIGHT side of the equal sign. It will be in the form of original string = new string. Search for the following to change the dialog box message: /* message for Browse Privately confirmation alert */ Same deal as the title. This one is a really long string on one line. You'll be scrolling for awhile to find that equal sign.

I think I need to start working on a new FireFox plugin (or get an iMac, but I think the plugin is cheaper) :)

Kyle, There are a bunch of features in the updated Safari for Panther that you can't see in Panther, only in Tiger. You can change them, but you can't use them :)

I haven't updated to Tiger yet, Tomorrow!!!, yay!, but i still looked into my safari and it has that option in the Interface Builder. Why can't I see it though?

If only activating Porn mode, would also broadcast the Safaris current URL on ones iChat status.
