My spelling is bad :( but at least not having to highlight a word makes it quicker. Also it is really quick on my iMac G4 1ghz

it works in mail and address book as well so maybe it is just Apple apps? Thats a bit of a shame because behavious like this should be system wide

Same here. Does this work on standard text fields? Not working in Firefox is hardly news as gecko uses self drawn widgets, not the system ones.

Does the download manager in Safari close automatically after completion of downloads in the new version?

Great find. I tried it with SafariRSS, Mail and NewsFire (rss reader) and it all worked fine. I think the fact that it doesn't work with Firefox or Word (I tried that as well) maybe has something to do with using Cocoa. According to "Daring Fireball" this only seems to work in Cocoa apps that use NSTextView and WebView.

CK & Pete: Even the compact OED is about four-hundred bucks. The unabridged is over a grand. The OAD? Six bucks. OS X Tiger OED Edition would be a tad bit expensive, I think. (Although, yeah, all things being equal, the OED over the OAD any day.)

"...four-hundred bucks."
Did I just hyphenate four hundred? Gee, and a Strunk & White is only fifty cents, lightly used.

Also of note, the delay reference before it works only occurs (for me) the first time it's activated...

I've tried it but it doesn't work for me. I checked in keyboard shortcuts and the shortcut is apple control D, tried it in safari but nothing happens. Anyone else getting the same problem?

Does the "Oxford Dictionary" dropdown at the bottom left switch from dictionary to thesaurus, or is it to select different dictionaries?

#14: Switches from dictionary to thesaurus. In practice. In theory, I bet it will switch between any dictionaries installed in the proper manner. But the OAD and thesaurus are the only things installed by default.

The online subscription is £195+VAT per year. But that's the full (multi-volume bookshelf sized) OED.
The concise/pocket sized versions in paper form cost around £5-£30. I'm willing to bet these are around the same size as the OAD included in Tiger (they are certainly a lot bigger than my pockets :) ).

Do Tiger users in other countries have a dictionary in their native language (e.g., and Italian dictionary for Italian Tiger users)?

The dictionary included is the New Oxford American Dictionary, 2e, which is about $60 US, not six bucks.

Works in Tiger 10.4.2. Is there any chance that you have accidentally altered the keyboard shortcut (in System Prefs / Keyboard & Mouse / Shortcuts)? Not sure about the English names; I'm on a Swedish system.
