Tiger Tips: Make Spotlight Index a Network Drive

NSLU2There's a very useful new hint over at Mac OS X Hints that shows you how to enable Spotlight indexing of drives on your network.

By default, Spotlight only indexes drives connected locally to your Mac, but now if you have something like a NSLU2 set up to share files between multiple computers, all you need to do is execute a few commands via the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities/) to force Spotlight to start indexing these types of drives.

You can burn spotlight indexed CDs and DVDs this way too. You just have to build them as a disk image first and index the image, then you can burn the image from the disk utility (or whatever it's called). ...At least I think everything works alright like that. I tried it with a CD and didn't get much improvement, but maybe you'd see more with a DVD. I didn't want to waste two DVDs trying. *shrug*

Well... http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000990039809/ Find a way to port it to the OS X BSD system (it's in python, I believe, so not TOO hard), mount it as a drive, and voila? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

Brilliant! After installing Tiger last Friday I noticed that my external firewire drive was not indexed. I suppose because it's formated in FAT32. The mdutil command let me turn on indexing on this drive! 23 mins to go before it's finished!! Wish Spotlight could index my 10000 emails in Entourage
