Peanut Butter Crackers, a Diet Coke and... an iPod?

I've seen the iPod vending machine in San Francisco International Airport. Apparently there's also one on Concourse A of the Atlanta International Airport. I have yet to see one in JFK or LaGuardia, but I suppose it's just a matter of time before iPods become as common in vending machines as beef jerky.

Uh...when I bought my iPod, it didn't have a full battery, I had to charge it. How are you supposed to use these if they're bought on the way to catch a plane? I must be missing something.

I think it would be more interesting to see vending machines that ONLY dispensed music. YOu hook up your own iPod to the machine and you can buy whatever music that's on there. Now THAT would be cool.

It would be cool if these were actually Apple Machines, as in owned by Apple. I was expecting a really cool looking machine. It would be nice to know what the prices are in those also. I would expect a hefty convenience fee.

Here's what I want to know: How do you know what color you're getting with the iPod Minis? Are there different colors on different racks?

I think the machines have USB ports so you can download music. I don't recall seeing that at SFO, but I really didn't look that hard (was trying not to miss my flight!). And of course, as you said, you can log on to the iTMS at a hotspot and download new stuff. Or maybe your iTunes library is already filled, in which case you just need to sync up (because perhaps your iPod was stolen or you accidentally packed it in the luggage you checked?) As far as the headphones go, there's usually a Brookstones or similar in every airport where you could by new headphones if you really wanted them. My guess is that anyone buying a last-minute iPod at the airport will be just fine with the stock earbuds, though :)

Great idea. Except... If you're so iPodless that you're moved to buy an iPod from an airport vending machine, what will you do once you've bought it? Look at it? Because, unless these are special models, there's nothing to listen to. I suppose you could but a T-mobile daypass and go onto the ITMS and buy a handful of albums for the return flight. Also, I'd hate for someone's first experience with an iPod to be with the stock earbuds on board a roaring 757. Unless you're willing to jam your fingers into your ears along with the buds, the fidelity, unlike the airplane, is not high at all.
