Belkin Intros USB and Firewire Hub for Mac mini

belkin hub for mac miniThe latest in a parade of accessories designed to compliment the form factor of the Mac mini is Belkin's new high-speed USB and Firewire hubs. Each model lets you connect up to four USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 devices and the combo model adds 2 Firewire ports. Both also include 2 ports up front for easy access. The hubs are, as you'd expect, white, stackable and fit perfectly under your Mac mini.

Expected to ship in mid-July, the USB-only hub will have an MSRP of about $40, while the USB/Firewire hub will be about $60. I suspect street prices will be a little less. As a bonus, the Belkin hubs also double as pot trivets.

As much as I want to like this product, I'm a tad concerned about two things. 1) No External Power: I can understand this for USB 2.0 devices, but what about the FireWire hub? Perhaps technology has improved, but I was under the impression that all FireWire hubs are basically repeaters. And if you use FireWire you know that the benefit is great when it is a repeater. 2) The Price is Too High: $40 for an unpowered USB hub? Come on. I am using a 4 port USB min-hub/dongle on my Mac mini and it cost me about $14 and works great. I can almost understand the $60 price, but I think the retail price should be shaved off by $10 on each model and then they'll have a product that's a real seller.

(note: I'm not the same brian that posted comment #1) Finally! Someone listened! (Yeah, right.) http://apple.newbox.org/article.php?story=20050425131300555 I'd still like more front ports, and audio, but it's a good start. At this point, I'll probably get one.

Ugh...OK, where are all these types of products for the iMac G5? Does anyone realize that product still exists? I'm curious if this device would support the weight of an iMac G5 20"er on top of it?
