Taboo Saves You From Yourself
It works great for me in Tiger. I haven't tested it in Panther, so proceed there at your own risk.

Me likey.

Holding the Command key (aka the Apple key) and pressing Tab will cycle through your open applications. It's easier to Cmd-Tab if you are Copy (Cmd-C) and Pasting (Cmd-V) to and from various applications.

Just turn off "open 'safe' files after downloading". No need to add a layer of kruft to it. Even on a Mac, there's no reason to let browsers trigger applications outside of themselves.
That warning seriously needs to make it into the standard client though. It's only been brought up to Hyatt since 1.0. What kind of tabbed browser lets you do that? Arg.

Finally. Downloaded and installed with Tiger with no problems. Tested it, no problems. Hopefully no more closing all my tabs on accident.

But I /want/ to open 'safe' files without prompting and without waiting for me to manually open them after they've downloaded. If I uncheck that option, I stop getting prompted, sure - but I also have to still open the files myself.

Laurie, that's my point. You don't want your browser to ever behave like that. Our beloved platform is sufficiently immune to viruses and other common internet security flaws, so we generally don't worry about propogation. Macs as a whole won't have large sets of self-replicating viruses out in the wild. But you, and your individual computer are *quite* open to a malicious attack if you download and run code intentionally.
Add to the fact that Safari can be triggered from within a website to automatically download things without asking you, and, well, you do the math.
Automatic download + auto run = bad news for Laurie.
Seriously, is one extra double-click so intrusive?

Am I the only one who thinks this kind of thing is ANNOYING and NOT helpful? Really, people! The amount of bitching about accidentally closing a multi-tabbed window is unbelievable, just use your brain. Do I have tabs open...Yes...Whoops, better not close the window. Yesh. Personally, I thank god that Apple didn't include this POINTLESS feature on Safari, otherwise it would rank up there with my only gripe with OS X - the warning about whether you want to restart/shutdown or not. While this might be appropriate for a hit to the power button (you could do this accidentally) the odd of me accidentally clicking the apple menu and inadvertently selecting these bottom-of-the-menu options is so low and clicking option before when I intend to do it is just annoying.

I hate "are you SURE" messages myself, SNeu, but when I'm on my first cup of coffee at 6:30am, my finger has more than once hit Q instead of W, and instead of closing the tab I was reading, it closes the whole mess of 'em. I understand Apple's reasons for not doing it. HIG wouldn't allow Cmd-Q to function *any* different than it does for any other apps. If there's no changes to a document to save, it closes obediently, otherwise it would ask you to save before you exit.
The "correct" fix would be a better history, that remembered not only what sites you visited, but stash them into "views" so that you could open recent views from your history if you accidentally shut things down instead of having to open them individually.

Clearly typed by a guy who doesn't do a lot of CMD-W'ing and/or doesn't do move around his Mac at lightening speed. In fact, your comment about the warning on restart and shutdown is another example of your lack of reliance on keyboard shortcuts. If you've ever hit CTRL-EJECT by accident, you'd be happy to see that message.
By the way, if you want to bypass that wanring on restart/shutdown, you might want to learn these keyboard commands:
command+control+eject (desktops)
Restart immediately (chance to save changes in open documents)
command+option+control+eject (desktops) or
command+option+control+power (laptops)
Shutdown immediately (chance to save changes in open documents)
command+control+power button
Force restart (no chance to save changes in open documents)

Quite to the contrary, I am a hardcore key-command shortcut user, but CMD+W closes only your open tab, not the window. For that I believe you need (arrow up)+CMD+W. I didn't mean for my former post to sound swarmy, but I was actually pointing out that such key commands limit the need for such warnings.
On a side note: Do many people often find themselves mashing CNTRL and EJCT often?

DJones is totally right, I didn't see his post, but that seems like the right solution to me.

Actually, I /meant/ CMD-Q'ing ;)
CNTRL-EJECT isn't that difficult to do by accident on a cluttered desk, trust me :)

Wow, this is just what I was looking for. I hate when I accidentally close tabs and don't mean to, so annoying. Finally something to help with it! SWEET! Thanks for the great find!

Nice fix, but how do you disable the highly annoying popup that is generated by internect connect (I think) asking you if you wish to stay connected to the internet?
Whoever comes up with a fix for this should get 5 stars.

I gotta say, I prefer Saft, which can be set to remember all your open tabs even after you've quit, and re-load them all when you re-start.
It does add a fair number of options to your Safari menus though, so if you only want the warning, it's probably not worth all the cruft.
But it does also allow you to re-order tabs by dragging them. Which is kinda cool.

SiPod,
I am on broadband but I will have a poke around in there anyway and see what I can find. Thanks for the tip, I didn't think to look there.

Why doesn't apple give us the best of both worlds? A window that states 'you have x tabs open, do you wish to close' and THEN have a check box stating "do not show this again"
that way the people who don't like it can make it go away, and the people who do like it don't have to download an extra program for it!
Now about the fact that Safari gives no sort of feedback whenever it blocks a window...

I have. Works fine on Safari 1.3 (v312). Risk minimised.

Cyberwhore, assuming you're on a modem, go to Apple Menu : System Preferences : Network : "Show" Internal Modem : "PPP" tab : "PPP Options..." button. There you'll find peace and contentment.
