Preview.app not to be trusted?
Came across an interesting bug report over at MacInTouch. A form that shows a price of $40 in Acrobat Reader v4.x and v7.x, but shows a price of $35 in Preview. Rob Currie says... "I noticed this as I first viewed the form using OS 8.6, and when Abode Reader 4.9 opened the same pdf, I saw it flip from $35 to $40. Further investigation showed that the PDF file had listed $35 as the price when first created but had been changed to $40 by adding a text box with the new price to cover the old price. Adobe Reader 7 shows the alteration correctly, but Preview 2.1 ignores it."
I can't remember the last time I opened Preview without it being by accident. It could have been missing from the Tiger installer and I never would've noticed. I have always found it unbearably slow and of very limited use. This report just reinforces my decision to forget it even exists.
How many of you use Preview regularly? Mind telling me why?

Preview is simple and versatile. It doesn't install bad mojo onto Word as does Adobe Acrobat Pro. And it loads in a tenth the amount of time that it takes for PS to run. How could anyone not include it on their dock?
July 20 2005 at 8:52 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThanks Oli. I've fixed it now, thought that wasn't the 'actual size'. On PDFs, Preview Rules - safari RSS (on pdfs) has no tools - whats with that?!
May 23 2005 at 10:04 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes, I'll chime in for Preview. If you've tried to hunt through the MySQL manual (1500 pages of PDF) for everything about the "pets" example, you'll want Preview's search-results-in-drawer ability. Plus it's great for viewing a bunch of images quickly. And you can annotate and everything else in Tiger. I thought Preview was fantastic just from the Steve Jobs demo at WWDC where he showed it doing a dynamic search - that was, what, 2003, for the then-upcoming Panther version. I long since dumped AAR - that would have been about 18 months ago.

However, if you read your initial front page post on the Preview bug, a comparison is drawn between it and Acrobat. You may not have discovered the bug (per your quoted text) but the initial story post does nothing to imply you don't use it, leaving the reader to draw that conclusion. Understand? Further, not everyone reads each and every post in a long string of reader commentary, and will often just read your story, and go straight to the feedback section, thus missing your comment on this page about what PDF viewers you do use. So don't blame the readers for misunderstanding you, as it was not a stretch to misinterpret the meaning of your story/blurb on the front page.
May 22 2005 at 2:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPreview IS faster, but when it comes to accuracy, Acrobat is the way to go. I found this out while comping PDFs for a client. Certain things dont even show up!
May 22 2005 at 1:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPreview is certainly one of my least favourite things about switching from a pc. Microsoft Picture/Fax Viewer (or whatever it's called) that comes in windows XP is easily the fastest photo viewer I've ever used. It views files in order of how they're arranged in a folder, so it doesn't need to keep all of the files in the cache like preview if I want to view photos in order from a days session/whatever. And if something needs to be rotated in preview, NEVER SAVE... I usually end up force quiting after a minute of being embarassed while trying to show my girlfriend that the mac is sooo much prettier. I don't even bother with iPhoto anymore. It's so slow it almost makes me want to go on a diet of grapes and waste away to nothing.
May 22 2005 at 3:57 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor upload speed reasons I like to copy my photos into a desktop folder before importing into iPhoto, especially when I have a number of 128mb chips to upload since I have an older G4 with a usb 1 connection. IPhoto uploads much faster from the folder than from the camera you see. Sometimes I use preview to get a quick look at what I have taken by doing a select all, then double clicking on the selected files. This opens them up into a single preview file which can be saved an opened in acrobat later if I want, but is very easy to scroll through if I want to just take a gander at what I have without opening up the 7,000 photo iphoto library. I also use it to save documents via print preview tha fast and easy way. Especially if I want to send something that I don't want changed. So, preview is O.K. I would like more controls, but all in all, it is not so bad. Oh, for real control of photos, I am very fond of Graphic Converter plus which has many more controls, is not that expensive and has many more photo import/export photo type features. You can't do layers I think, but you can do just about everything else.
