Mac Gaming: Sims 2 Goes Gold Master

sims 2My wife is obsessed with the Sims. She likes to take all of our friends and create little virtual families based upon them, marrying some friends to other friends, making a few of them the children of others, and every once in a while throwing a T.V. family into the mix. Nothing makes her more blissfully zen than sitting in front of the Sims for an hour or so, buying things and redesigning houses, and trying to get our virtual friends to make babies.

I personally don't get it, but I know she will be overjoyed to hear that Aspyr today announced that the Sims 2 for Mac is now Gold Master and will soon begin shipping. It's listed at $49.99.

Am I the only person who doesn't "get" the attraction of the whole virtual life genre? I have my own life to live. I go to work, I pay bills, I get together with friends, I go on holiday...sure, I don't have a fancy car or a big house, but so what? A fantasy on the computer isn't going to translate to real life no matter how much I play. Or maybe I'm just so emotionally and socially stunted that the point of the "game" is going right over my head. Can anyone give me a clue here?

If she liked the original Sims, be prepared to find a support group for her when they start shipping #2...
