Scott McNulty: I want to go to that secret lab
Scott McNulty: what else is in there?
C.K. Sample, III: As a matter of fact, this system Ive been using here the keynotes been running on a P4 3.6GHz all morning
C.K. Sample, III: OMG!!!
C.K. Sample, III: a P4
C.K. Sample, III: it seems soooo WRONG
Scott McNulty: Maybe that's where C.K. went

C.K. Sample, III: Theres a checkbox for builds: Intel, PowerPC that makes a cross-platform single binary.
Scott McNulty: Cocoa apps need to be recompiled and Carbon apps will need a little more work

C.K. Sample, III: I'm posting our chat in sections now

C.K. Sample, III: man, this whole Intel switch just seems wrong
Scott McNulty: it is creepy
C.K. Sample, III: my friend, Jay, just pinged me and said "Why not AMD?"
Scott McNulty: well some say it is all about the DRM
Scott McNulty: that intel has baked in
C.K. Sample, III: gaaaaah
Scott McNulty: and AMD doesn't
C.K. Sample, III: so wrong so evil
C.K. Sample, III: NOOOOOOOOOO
Scott McNulty: it is true
Scott McNulty: processor level DRM
Scott McNulty: how's that for ya?
C.K. Sample, III: I think I may become a LINUX guy
Scott McNulty: hmm you are a fool!
C.K. Sample, III: it's just sooo wrong
Scott McNulty: though if Macs ship with that stupid 'Intel Inside' logo on them I will flip out
C.K. Sample, III: "let's lock down all the information that we can in a very non-internet way!!!"
C.K. Sample, III: yeah
C.K. Sample, III: tell me about it
Scott McNulty: the thinking seems to be that Jobs wants a video iTMS
Scott McNulty: with video iPd
Scott McNulty: so DRM is good
C.K. Sample, III: no it isn't
Scott McNulty: for them
Scott McNulty: bad for you
C.K. Sample, III: you can have those things without it
Scott McNulty: you pirate!
C.K. Sample, III: bad for everyone
C.K. Sample, III: bad for America and the whole world
Scott McNulty: if you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about
C.K. Sample, III: i'm NOT A PIRATE
C.K. Sample, III: that's BS
Scott McNulty: I'm just pulling your chain
C.K. Sample, III: remember the Classic to OS X switchover
C.K. Sample, III: ?
Scott McNulty: I do
Scott McNulty: it was awful
C.K. Sample, III: there were some staunch "Noooooos" to that
C.K. Sample, III: this is just soo much more
Scott McNulty: this is HUGE!
C.K. Sample, III: this is either really great news
C.K. Sample, III: or it is the beginning of the end of Apple
Scott McNulty: hmm I think overall it will be a good thing
C.K. Sample, III: and the DRM thing has me a bit worried it is the latter
Scott McNulty: remember Apple survived a similiar transition
C.K. Sample, III: btw, everyone who is reading...
Scott McNulty: to the PowerPC
C.K. Sample, III: I hereby proclaim this a CHATCAST
Scott McNulty: nice!
Scott McNulty: I love it!
C.K. Sample, III: maybe iTunes will someday support it
Scott McNulty: yes, but you will set the pref in iPhoto
C.K. Sample, III: no. In Pages
Scott McNulty: ahh that makes more sense
C.K. Sample, III: wow
C.K. Sample, III: how far off was our podcast
C.K. Sample, III: ?
C.K. Sample, III: we suck

C.K. Sample, III: is there any "one more thing"
C.K. Sample, III: Gates walks out on stage and announces that Macs will now run Windoze?!

Wondering if Apple plans to now sue WSJ now that trade secrets were stolen before announcement.
June 06 2005 at 5:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, I think I'm still gonna buy my Mac mini within the next few months. Why? Well, I don't think I can wait til 2006. I need a new computer now. And, since I'm not a hardcore gamer or developer, I have no need for the latest and greatest of hardware. And it will get me through til I can get my Intel-powered PowerBook in 2007. Yes, I think this will hurt Mac hardware sales, but only in the short run. Most people who were planning to buy a Mac and can wait will wait for the Intel Mac (hmm...will the iMac become the IMac?) and then they'll get a sales jump when they finally bring it out. Those who will, and want to, wait, will. I can't imagine someone saying "Well, this Mac will be slightly out of date in a year, so I'll go buy a Dell."
June 06 2005 at 5:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI wonder if now other hardware companies (such as Sony) will want to utilise Mac OS on their computers instead of that other OS?
June 06 2005 at 4:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOMFG super great ChatKast -- did you actually coin a new InterWeb term??? I laughed and screamed and screamed and laughed... until I started freaking out. I HAVE to get a dual G5 ASAP. How screwed am I? Really-- how screwed? Comments up till now seem to run 50-50 pos-neg. WHAT'S THE DEFINITIVE ANSWER??? The blogosphere has a right to know! I love TUAW!
June 06 2005 at 3:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhttp://developer.apple.com/ Webcast is linked there, although it jsut went down. I'd leave it be for a few hours... i can't do it. *clicks again and again*
June 06 2005 at 3:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOh, almost forgot, GREAT CHATCAST!, laughed a lot reading it.
June 06 2005 at 3:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am still hoping for a no-frills "website update" of the iBook tommorrow (remmember hardware updates are on tuesdays!), as a way to send signal of: we would still have cool things the next few months... But I am worried!, what mac faithful is going to buy a mac in the next 12months?.
June 06 2005 at 3:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought my first Mac - an iMac G5 - in January this year. I placed an order for a Power Mac last week which is in the process of being manufactured. Do I regret my iMac purchase ? Should I cancel the Power Mac order ? No! The Macs fulfill a current need - I can't run Mac OS X on anything else for the next year or so. As I understand it, PPC support will continue beyond the introduction of Intel and for the foreseeable future. There'll be backward compatibility of applications in the future. I was/am happy with my Mac purchases so why should the announcement today change that ? It's no different a situation than if (for example) the PPC G6 was announced today.
June 06 2005 at 3:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTeece, Apple's hardware sales are not destroyed at all if you simply understand what is happening. BOTH x86 and PPC platforms will be supported. And the support will be relatively transparent. And now that Apple can spend less time worrying about hardware issues, they can then spend more time on making the OS rock-solid. And iron out transition compatibility issues. So it's not as if the Mac mini on my desk right now is a paperweight. Not at all. And investing in a Mac now is not a bad idea or a 'lame duck' of a move.
June 06 2005 at 2:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOy vey, this makes me vexed. I spent $1300 dollars on an iMac 6 months ago it's just been end-of-lifed. This was my first Mac ever. Sure, it will be completely usable for as long as the hardware lasts, but realistically, I have a year or two left of anything resembling mainstream support, and then just the slow decline into memory, like the Amigo or the NeXT... At least, if official MacOS support goes away, I can run Linux on it. I really wanted to by my wife a Mac, so I could quit maintaining her Linux machine. That's now out. Apple just destroyed their hardware sales for a couple of years, I hope their accounting can handle it. (Hopefully the iPod can prop them up over the next year or two, as it's going to need to). But I'm not all doom and gloom. I would like the prospect of being able to use Wine on a Mac. I would like the product line to expand and get cheaper, although it is not at all clear that it will. It's important to note that Microsoft can now make Virtual PC into a version of Wine, with the key exception that Microsoft is the only player that fully understands and controls the Windows library. It may become completely possible for software vendors to completely skip a Mac port, and just inform their customers that their software runs fine under VPC. I'm not sure yet if that is a good or a bad thing. The old Chinese curse, may you live in interesting times.
