My wish for the iPod
No, I'm not looking for a video iPod with WiFi capabilities, web, email and handwriting recognition all for under $200. My request is much simpler. When I'm in the car, which is where I listen to my iPod most often, I just set it to shuffle and let it run. Occasionally the 'Pod will select a song that will prompt me to think, "Yeah, I'd like to listen to this whole album right now." Currently, selecting the target album requires me to navigate back to the main menu, then artist (because the artist list is shorter than the album list), then album and then play. Not good at 60 m.p.h. I propose that, if the iPod is in shuffle mode, a simple click of the center button will jump to the parent album of the currently playing track (without interrupting that track). For instance, if "Banana Pancakes" by Jack Johnson begins to play, I need only click the center button to jump right to "In Between Dreams," the song's parent album. It's not a big dream, but a dream all the same.

Ahhh... I always come up with ideas for things that product managers of my belongings could have implemented easily, but they never listen. -.-;; It's a good idea, really good idea actually, but sadly I doubt the makers of the iPod will ever catch word of this, or even give a crap if they do. They suck. :P

Of course, you could also go a step further and add another contextual menu for Artist, Album and Genre to shuffle. I like the shuffle option, but it's all or nothing. Would be nice to shuffle the artist or album.

The best way to fix this for me would be by adding context sensitive menus to the iPod. iTunes wins with me for music because of one simple fact. I can sort through organized material and find exactly what I'm looking for. iPod's sorting is great, but it doesn't compare with iTunes. Adding context sensitivity (basically and iPod right click function) would do so much for the player.

This would allow me to setup smart playlists with things like if last time skipped is within last month or number of times skipped is > than number of times played keep out of my playlist.
June 09 2005 at 9:46 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI proposed something similar at http://blog.nonlinearmatters.com/interface/my-dream-ipod/ basically some way to view similar songs (from rating, genre, library) or edit more than the rating (genres, mainly). and smooth navigation, like partymix (the selected song starts AFTER the current song) i assume it's better to wait till podzilla gets sturdy and do it ourselves... :-(

I am using an Alpine head unit in my car together with its iPod interface - ipod in the glove box, I control everything from the head unit. The randomizing is done by the Alpine h/u. So when I'm in "mix" mode (=random) and decide to listen to the whole album I just press the MIX button and ta-da! It continues playing but no more shuffling. I really recommend Alpine's solution, a few quirks aside (it's a tad slow to scroll through the entire artist list) it works perfectly. Charges the ipod too. No messing with wires hanging down the dashboard and noisy FM transmitters. The cheapest h/u that is compatible costs around $200, plus $99 for the interface (KCA-420i). Greg
