Pics of Intel Inside G5 Casing

intel in G5I seem to remember a hack that came out shortly after the G5s shipping where someone claimed to have gutted the machine and replaced all the PPC innards with the insides from his old Dell. The Mac community reacted in shocked astonishment and freaked out, flaming the post. I seem to also remember it being a hoax. I only wish there were some way for me to find that information...

In any case, O'Grady's Powerpage has a few choice pics of an Apple-created PowerMac with an Intel board crammed inside. According to the Powerpage, "Apple is making development boxes available to select ADC Premiere members for US$999 at this week's WWDC conference in San Francisco."

The one thing it DOES show is just how much space was used in the current G5 PowerMacs for cooling. Granted, this is a single processor board, but I can't wait to see what Apple does with a production P4 system in terms of quiet cooling.

<20dBA fans? A little better than Dell.

Watercooling with nice quiet pumps? Darn near silent.

Passive radiator cooling? A pipe dream (pun!), but I'd LOVE to see it!

I bet Apple goes out of their way to impress with the first P4 PowerMac, in terms of cooling design, if only to justify moving to Intel. Can't wait to see what they dream up. If it's silent and it runs Windows, I might even replace my PC with an expensive Apple case. :)

Pedro...these are development boxes, so no this bears NO resemblance to what it will look like when it goes into production. I agree, the pic quality sucks - they should have known better being a WWDC than to go without a real camera.

A coupe of things here... really the packaging we are looking at is really a beta type of setup... it has to be. It looks a little too thrown together to be something that will go into production. I wouldnt be surprised to see some new box for the future Power Mac series. Secondly... a camera phone?! Please people you are at a WWDC... take a digital camera!
