WebObjects 5.3 developer tools free with Tiger
WebObjects is Apple's often overlooked Java based web application/services tool, and it looks like this WWDC has been good to it. Version 5.3 has been released and bundled with Xcode 2.1.Xcode 2.1 is free, therefore Apple has just made all the developer tools for WebObjects free, and they weren't cheap a few hours ago. It has long been rumored that Apple might release WebObjects under an open source license and recent developments don't exactly pave the road for such a release but they anchor them in reality at the very least.
In addition to being bundled (for free) with Xcode, 'This release also provides an updated WebObjects Builder, HTML/XHTML compatibility, Java Collection Classes support, updated WebServices, and Oracle 10g support.'

I agree Daniel and selling WebObjects to clients as a result of the poor market visibility in very difficult. Q: What other development tools would be similar to WebObjects, but easier to sell to clients? Thanks in advance!

I was about to purchase WO to fool around with. WO is another shining example of Apple's extremely poor sales & marketing. 5 years ago nothing was even close to WO - and WO was cross platform. Yet, I couldn't find a single developer who had ever even heard of WO. Of course when I described WO they were very interested. Now there are 5+ similar WO products out there making billions of $. Almost criminal.

I'm sure starting with 5.3 and beyond we will once again start seeing WebObjects move forward. I would welcome WebObjects to be released under an open source license. I've seen many WebObjects projects switch to open source alternatives even though WebObjects is superior. Many clients seem to not have a problem with open source libraries. So I think that an open source WebObjects would help with its adoption in those scenarios.

June 08 2005 at 9:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAAA (the auto club, not the escort service) runs its site on WebObjects, and back when WO was a part of NeXT (anyone remember them?) a little computer company known as Dell actually used the platform to run their e-commerce site. So, in a way, Steve Jobs is the "father" of Dell's "easy" to use website for ordering el-cheapo PC's. Nooooo! That's not true! That's impossible! Same things I was saying about an Intel switch a few days ago. I'm better now.
