Intel "Upgrade" for Powermac Cube available

cubeDespite it's untimely death, the Powermac Cube is the machine that just won't go away. Now, Korean company U-Power is offering an "upgrade" that places either a 1.5Ghz or a 1.8GHz Intel Pentium-M processor in your Powermac G4 Cube, which will run Windows XP. Called the The PCube 1.5 and PCube 1.8, the upgrades are priced at $400 and $450 respectively. According to the company, this upgrade is "aimed at PC users who may be wooed by the stylish G4 Cube and thus consumed with a desire to dump their beige PC box." Before you get excited by the idea of a cheap developer box, understand that it is very unlikely that this upgrade will be able to boot into Mac OS X, as Apple has said only forthcoming Intel-based Macs will be able to perform this feat.

My god, they've created a vampire out of chips and circuitry. They'd have to rip out the cube's very soul to put a demon like Windows XP into it. All that would be left is the mere shell of the Cube. It wouldn't be the beloved Mac that you once knew; just a cold, heartless OS that would like nothing more than to suck your system resources and infest your life with virii.

I've seen this story at least ten times today and every time I read it I find it harder and harder to believe. The site that first reported this is sketchy at best. Check out their home page. Also, the article was written in feb. The technology here would be really difficult too. Pentiums just weren't meant to run on mac buses. Macs have totally different memory systems and the drivers needed to run a mac motherboard with a pc os just aren't there. Lastly, why would you bother making this for the cube. Wouldn't it make more sense to make it work with G4 desktops since I'm sure a lot more of those were sold.
