Taco time: mod Jay's eMac
- See if I can dig up the pinouts on the video display, and turn it into a monitor for a Mini, possibly with external FireWire and USB ports.
- Full fledged Taco: strip it bare and replace the innards with a flat screen and a Mini. Wouldn't even be too much work: there's room in there to seat a Mini case whole without even opening it.

Sitting here surrounded by the guts of my eMac, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to put all these bits of metal and plastic back...

I just got it: buy a PowerMac G4 Cube and put it inside, then hook it up to the eMac CRT!
December 13 2005 at 12:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyA great thing to do, (this is for the people on lower but moderate budgets, like me), before you do anything about the inside, take out the CRT, (of course discharge it first to avoid electrical accidents), take out the crt, put in an LCD that fits in the case so the whole screen is visible. THEN... Get a PowerMac G4, with 1GB-2GB of ram and the G-Celerator G4/1.8 Dual AGP 7A (7AD-1418U)G4 processor upgrade, and an upgraded or replaced graphic card, and put them in the emac case. Make sure you have at least a combo drive. You know have the ultimate mac gaming machine! (Budget Model). I have been trying to do something like this for about two months now, still figuring out how and where to put all these parts. AND I KNOW I WILL SUCCEED! (Eventually)... If anyone figures out a way to do this right, email me at: ngatiaruan.prince@gmail.com COOL HEY!

Are the fish really worth the money you throw into these Macs? You might as well be making another short of the perfectly innocent looking Mac being tied to the back of a car and hauled around the block. Then make it into another one of those torrent files and host it. That way PC users can download the movie and cream their pants. Same result, the latter being more entertaining to a larger audience.

Voila - mood art. Replace the art/music to suit your guests. Highbrow girlfriend? How 'bout a nice Renaissance piece w/some Bach? Andy Warhol and ABBA? Picasso and Pink Floyd? The possibilities are endless, and so are the conversations you'll have about this interesting and entertaining art display. You could also paint the whole thing flat black, take out one of the speakers and put in its place a simple red light ala the HAL 9000. Record "Good Morning, Dave" as your startup sound and "Goodbye, Dave" as the shutdown. Hmm... "I can't do that, Dave" would be a great alert sound. Another possibility... flip the screen & DVD drive upside down, then mount the sucker onto a lazy susan attached to the ceiling inside your Dodge Grand Caravan. Add bluetooth & browse the 'net from the backseat. Or just put it all back together and paint big red lips around the DVD slot and eyelashes around the speakers. *shrug*

I had the idea to clean out the insides, put in a LCD to replace the CRT first of all. Then, (now this is where things go crazy and as if money weren't an option.) Install the guts from a G5 iMac behind the LCD, and add a small rack of hard drives (like 4 or 5 300GB Ultra ATA's). So now you've got this insanely great system inside the ugliest current-production apple product. (Face it though, Mac's on their worst days are still sexier than PC's)
June 22 2005 at 11:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have been looking for a while (or rather spent a day looking very hard while I was at my parent's house chanting incantations over the guts of my old dead lime imac) for the pinouts necessary to ressurect the monitor for external use. I gots nothing. If you find something, post a tutorial. I can't afford a new monitor and could really use an external for my tibook.

June 22 2005 at 10:24 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPut it back together minus the screen. Hookup a mac mini to the screen and use the eMac as a Headless File Server. All your out is $500 for the mini and $$$ if you wanted to upgrade your drive to a larger one. And of course the extra cable goin into the emac for the display. Reuse across the board :) You still get to keep your emac and you get a new machine running tiger that utilizes your old monitor. And if you ever get a new display then simply toss the file server under the desk or closet out of the way and as long as you have an airport card you are still good to go for using it.
June 22 2005 at 8:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, I wouldn't trash a eMac if you could get it up and running without spending too much, but... You could try fitting a VGA switch box in there so you could use it as an eMac and a Mini monitor.
June 22 2005 at 8:16 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyScrew the case. If all the internals aren't dead I would try to make a custom case around them sort of like I started doing with this Rev C iMac: http://www.deviantart.com/view/4493919/ I plan to complete it someday I just need to get something else to take over its current networked file server and network jukebox duties.
