MacDevCenter on Video in iTunes

gorillazJ.D. Biersdorfer, the author of iPod and iTunes: The Missing Manual, has a new MacDevCenter article up: Going to the Movies (and More) in iTunes 4.8, where she writes "Podcasting in iTunes 4.9 is just around the corner. Until then, have you played with the video functionality in 4.8? If not, here are a few things that Steve Jobs has mentioned--and a few he hasn't."

I mentioned some of the cool bits of it a while back, but this article has a few new useful bits that I didn't know about, like the following: "To snag the audio track after you've added the clip to iTunes, select the video clip in your iTunes library list and choose Advanced -> "Convert Selection to AAC" to make an audio-only dupe of the track. . . . This assumes that your iTunes importing preferences are still set to the default AAC; you can change the conversion file type in the Advanced menu by pressing Command-, on the Mac (Control-, on a Windows system) and selecting your audio choice on the drop-down menu on the Importing tab." Nice. Now I can import all my .MOV or MPEG4 videos into iTunes and strip them down to soundtrack only versions that I can listen to when I'm on the go. It's like podcasts of all my favorite TV shows!

As an interesting "side effect" of the video feature in iTunes is the fact that you can organize your video collection as well. I am a video editor in Brazil and with plenty of footage to manage, now I have a video library right in my hand! Just have to capture as Offline RT and use iTunes to managge with comments, stars and so on...iTunes also accept mp4 video so I wonder if, exporting the videos already captured in OfflineRT format gave me small sized files, than compressing them in mp4 format will give me even smaller ones all managed via iTunes! More of this soon!
