July 7th?
Well, this is all very interesting. I'm excited about the new color iPods and getting to play around with iTunes 4.9 with podcasting support. But now that they've been released more than a week earlier than expected, we have a new question on our hands: what is the big announcement Steve supposedly has scheduled for July 7th? Most of us assumed that the bash was going to be in honor of iTunes 4.9 and possibly the new iPods that showed up today. so what do we think is really going to happen on the 7th? Here are my top choices:- Nothing: the original claim came from Mac Bidouille, and something got lost in translation.
- Steve climbs the Arc d'Triomphe and yells "ha, ha! Fooled you again, new media!"
- New iPod Shuffles or iPod Minis.
- Video capabilities for the new iPods and the iPod Photo.
- The much ballyhooed, much maligned, long delayed iPod Phone.

All I'm going to say is that the iPod product matrix looks a little bare at the high end right now.And why do that wonky thing with the U2 pod price cut? Unless, you know, there's something else that's going to snick right into that $350 spot. Like, you know, a wifipod or something. Maybe with a 30 gig harddrive.
Plus, you've GOT to think that Apple has another digital lifestyle device somewhere in the wings.Something like, I don't know, a REMOTE for the airport express, maybe. Kids are going back to school soon. Now's the time. How bout a ipod/airport express bundle for 499?
Somethings else is up, and it's not going to just be a lame-ass cellphone.

I have my bets on the phone. The minis were updated in April, the Shuffles just got a price drop (and no, I doubt it was to get rid of inventory, especially on sure short notice). Probably won't be any updates in the iPod line because of all the ones today, so that pretty much leaves the phone, or a 'one more thing' as it were.
It is kind of exciting, especially since I thought good news would be slow until the Intel Macs start shipping.

It is just going to be a lameass cellphone. Why would Apple release one iPod now, and then a new one a week later? It's stupid. I wish as much as anyone for it to be a wifipod, tablet mac, or videoipod, but it's not going to happen next week.

As far as I recall - its not going to be a new mac (I read that somewhere, maybe WWDC keynote transcript) so a tablet is out of the question. I think it will just be the phone with hopefully more than 1 gig space. Nevertheless - we still got a bunch of time for the rumor mill to keep workin.
PS I would be pissed if it was a tablet - i just bought my new M200 :)

hmm..this is a good one. i was actually expecting the new ipods to come out next week too..like everyone else.
i think perhaps an ipod video..but that's not possible because then itunes 4.9 would need full h264 video support, which it doesnt already have.
must be the ipod phone (moto) or an airport express video/remote..

I hope it's a tablet mac, but even that seems logical to wait for intel... Video ipod would be great but i think stevie J is against that as it defeats the point of the ipod... lets see if he can get some movies on itms...

I'm obsessed with the soon-to-be released iControl from m-audio. I would not be surprised if Apple debuted a breakout-box (Asteroid?) to go with it.

It could be an iPod update. What better way to throw off the rumormill than to unveil what they thought was coming 7/7 and then do the big thing at the event. That being said, I have my bets on iPhone.
