Virgin Install: GmailStatus
I have been a loyal gCount user for a long time, however, recently I have switched to GmailStatus and I haven't looked back. It seemed with every tiny change on Gmail's side gCount would stop working, and since I use my Gmail account as my primary email address I can't work without a notifier of some sort.GmailStatus offers the same basic features as gCount, however, it just works and I like the icon that it displays in the menu bar a little more.

I use Gee, but only because its Growl notice tells me who sent the latest e-mail. Gmail Status just puts a generic bubble up that says "new e-mail", which is pretty worthless. Here's hoping they change that.

What I use to be notified of new e-mails in my one Gmail account is the Google home page (http://www.google.com/ig). It shows me the five newest e-mails in my inbox if there are any and I can decide whether or not if I want to read them. For my other Gmail account, though, I use Mail since it's just easier to manage there than online. This way, my two accounts don't get mixed up.

July 01 2005 at 9:01 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy reason for using the web interface is also because of no IMAP support. I'd like to have virtual folders that tag the mail when you drag it in (and then show you messages with that tag when you open it). That being said, I use gmail purely for archival. All messages going to my real address go to both that mailbox and to my gmail account. The only problem is mail.app won't auto-bcc outgoing messages except to yourself. So I can't auto-bcc to gmail also.
July 01 2005 at 12:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell gmail is kinda like imap. I have it setup so that it archives my mail after it's downloaded as pop3...so if I ever need to grab that mail and I'm at work, it's all available in the All Maill box on gmail.com Do you just want folders and stuff in Mail.app? Or are you just worried you cant get all your mail in the webapp?
