Today Apple announced a contest to determine who will purchase the 500 millionth song from the iTunes Music Store. Apple is giving away an iPod mini and an iTunes gift card for 50 songs
to the iTunes customer who purchases the winning song at each 100,000
interval. To that lucky shopper who hits 500,000,000 however, Apple is going all out: "10 iPods for yourself and family or friends (choose from any model iPod, iPod mini, iPod U2, or iPod shuffle); a gold 10,000-song gift card for the music store; 10 additional 50-song gift cards to go with those iPods; and a trip for you and three guests to see Coldplay on its current tour, with front-row seats (subject to availability), and “back-stage” passes for a meet n’ greet with the band (guaranteed availability)."
Wow. Time to obsessively sit in front of that counter.

I agree that counter is perfect widget fodder. 10 iPods? thats a bit ridiculus IMO, how about a Powerbook?

I like the fact that the main winner gets to choose which type of iPods they want. Like anyone would choose 512Mb shuffles when they could have TEN 60Gb full-size iPods?!?!

Dude, I am so going to win this -- and I'm going to win it with a 7-11 Slurpee free song. I'm getting all my friends to buy Slurpees, then I offer to take care of the garbage... ho ho ho... soon, I will take over the world, one Slurpee at a time...

It's not really songs sold, right? It's songs downloaded.
