TUAW Podcast, the Third

microphoneOne of these days, we will actually have an embedded podcast with its own feed and its own place in the iTunes Music Store (assuming that Steve doesn't ban us for my anti-DRM rantings), but in the meantime, here's the link to TUAW Podcast, the Third.

You'll miss my melodious voice, as I was on vacation during the recording of the podcast (have I rubbed in that I've been on vacation enough yet?), but thankfully you'll get to enjoy Scott for the second time and Laurie for the first time in our podcast, discussing our new TUAWers, pronunciation of Dave's last name, the week of the non-announcement, the upcoming TUAW Macworld meetup, and the fact that none of us TUAW-bloggers have ever met face to face. The podcast weighs in at just under 15 minutes, so enjoy!

Carniphage, nope. That's the way Scott and Laurie sound (although Laurie is getting over a cold and Scott's mic is a bit bass heavy).

The audio sounds like it was made in Garageband with the voice-changer option. Is it all like the same person doing the different voices (a bit like a geeky John Shuttleworth)? Or is this some attempt to conceal identity.

Hey C.K. Whatever you want to believe... The term was given to a technology developed for users to subscribe to audio, video, or what ever else people could put up for syndication. The term is NOT about the action of moving an audio file over to your mp3 player. People cannot currently subscribe to your show so it isn't a Podcast. Apple just launched Podcasting in iTunes lastweek and have millions subscribing already. The now support the Podcast technology of using RSS feeds to subscribe to shows. I don't think you will convince Apple to change their position on that. Go talk to the people that came up with the technology and they will tell you the same thing. You aren't using the technology they came up with. For the time being you aren't. You said you will soon. Then it will be a true podcast. If it was about moving audio files to an mp3 player then Artists did that years ago at MP3.com. Remember MP3.com the first site to work with indie artists to put their music online for download - that wasn't a Podcast and neither is this. You are a journalist I would hope you would want to get the facts correct? not just put your fingers in your ears saying "I'm right. Your wrong"

C.K. - If by "enough people" you mean more than the one MILLION who only like a week ago were NOT using iTunes to SUBSCRIBE to content under the umbrella term PODCAST, then more power to you in mobilizing them sir...

Hmmm. What dictionary are you using? None of mine list 'podcast.' It's a new term, in flux, and I'm right. You are wrong. Wikipedia agrees with you, but if enough people agree with me, we can change that easily enough.

Hey C.K. Sample, III Actually your wrong...read what the definition of podcast is... Podcasting is a method of publishing files via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed to receive new files automatically. The word "podcasting" was coined in February 2004, portmanteau, combining "broadcasting" with the name of Apple Computer's iPod audio player (although podcasting was not invented by Apple, nor do podcasts require a portable player or Apple software). It is distinct from other types of online audio delivery because of its subscription model, which uses the RSS 2.0 file format. Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published, syndicated "radio shows", and gives broadcast radio programs a new distribution method. Listeners may subscribe to feeds using "podcatching" software (a type of "aggregator"), which periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically. Some podcatching software is also able to synchronise (copy) podcasts to portable music players. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts. The same technique can deliver video files, and by 2005 some aggregators could play video as well as audio. I understand that you mentioned needing your own feed for the podcast but it isn't a podcast without the feed, that was my point. You are simply posting an mp3 file of an online show. What you are doing isn't syndicated as an RSS subscription. ergo, ipso facto, it's NOT a podcast. It is an mp3 for download and that isn't the same thing. You are using a term just because it is popular and you are using it wrong. The facts -Ken
