Why doesn't iSync 'just work'?

isync updateRussell Beattie, mobile phone aficionado and employee of Yahoo, as well as part-time switcher to OS X is feeling a little short-sheeted by Apple today. He posted the following on his blog: "I'm not sure what happened, but I started getting a ton of comments that the new version of iSync supports newer Nokia Series 60 phones like my beloved 6680. I just upgraded this morning, did a scan in iSync.... It found my phone, but then gives me an error saying it isn't able to sync."

He then concludes his missive on iSync's failings by noting: "You know, I freakin' BOUGHT the Mac so these sorts of headaches wouldn't happen. If I wanted to be frustrated by annoying dialog boxes and un-fixable peripheral problems, I would have just stuck with a Windows box." Any other Switchers out there find themselves similarly disgruntled by iSync's performance?

This long time Mac user, for one, has been wondering what happened to the "it just works" aspect of the Mac ever since he upgraded to Tiger.

Haven't you heard? Apple changed its "just works" slogan to "just had a great fucking quarter".

Just to chime in... My Motorola v60 with iSync... just worked My Sony Erricson T616 with iSync... just worked My Sony Erricson T637 with iSync... just worked My current Motorola v551 with iSync... just worked Every one of these phones were purchased because they were on the iSync supported devises list. I understand that it can be frustrating when an advertised technology does not work, but anomalies can and do occur, especially with complex systems. When they do occur it must be understood that you are experiencing an error and not normalcy. Expectations must be realistic. You cannot fault an entire system on confined issues.

C.K., I feel your pain. Here's the empirical evidence: I have computers in my garage that will successfully boot OS 6, 7, 8 and 9. I was monkeying with them last month, and realized that almost all of them had never been "wiped clean and reinstalled." Some are over a decade old. Out of the three shiny new G5's we received at the beginning of this quarter, one became so unstable that it would kernel panic in single user during boot-- then hang. The other two hang on regular occasion (every 24-36 hours). I tried calling tech, got the "reinstall" message and tried the old archive & install. No dice. Yesterday I had to completely wipe one of them and reinstall. These machine are less than 3 months old. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. Sorry to raise my voice. But can everyone see how the "it just works" mantra has been slipping down the gutter at Cupertino lately? I mean, my iPod has crashed a few times in the time I've had it (less than a year). And don't get me started on .Mac and my iBook's problems... The only ray of sunshine is that, pound for pound, Macs are still better than the alternatives (IMO OK?). Just keep in mind that people have cut off their own arms because it was "better than the alternatives."

Chris - I've had this conversation with C.K.... in the context of other, earlier issues. Guess what... I provide Mac tech support for a living. I make a very good living doing it, too. And you know what? Sometimes things don't "just work," no matter how much time I or anyone spends talking someone through the gambit of troubleshoot steps. Sometimes things just don't work the way they are intended for everyone. Didn't Rush Limbaugh (http://www.tuaw.com/2005/05/03/rush-limbaugh-is-a) teach us all that lesson once before? It's working for you? Great. But not everyone shares that experience and it isn't always their fault.

Your refrigerator works, your tv works but does everyone's? No My mac just works too. Why dont you follow through. At the end of your conversation with tech support is your problem solved? If it isnt then keep talking to them until it is solved and working. They will send you eventually higher and higher. There are other users using the same OS as you with the same phone as you and it is working fine for them.

Chris, My refrigerator "just works." Never had a problem. Same thing with my TV, my Playstation 2, my PSP, my Gameboy, and a variety of other electronics. My Macs used to "just work." Also, Tiger is up to a certain point untroubleshootable. You can only troubleshoot so far before someone says, "Wipe it clean and reinstall." That's a Windows solution. It never used to be a Mac solution. That's my gripe. And trust me: I've gone through all the wasted time on the phone with Apple support in the past and whether you believe me or not, I do tend to know more than them, and for that reason they waste huge chunks of my time running me through the basic troubleshooting bits that I've already been through. I'm glad to hear that they've solved all of your problems, but open your mind slightly to the possibility that there are a lot of users out there left hanging by bugs that aren't bothering you.

Tell me one thing in the world that has always just worked. I am saying that alot of your problems are probably building on eachother and that if you solved the root of your problems you would probably be better off along the road instead of trying to apply a bandaid to the problem. Why are you so afraid to get your mac running by calling Tech Support? It is true that it doesnt just work but it works a whole lot better than anything else out there. Nothin ever just works in the world all of the time.
