Camino web browser updated to 0.9a2

Camicaminono (nee Chimera) fans will appreciate hearing that the new alpha release [0.9 Alpha 2] has been certified as "pretty dang snappy". ScottBruin suggests that if you haven't been using Camino , you should at least give it a try. You can read the release notes first, or be brave and just download it right now.

The only complaint we've heard so far from our tipster is that scrolling seems to lag a bit, especially on "complex" sites like ours. I just downloaded it and can confirm that to be the case, although I don't find it much laggier than Firefox when it comes to scrolling.

What are your thoughts on this particular browser?

For those who find Camino lacking in options/features, check out CamiTools (http://www.nada.de/mac). Individual modules (so no bloat) include flash blocking, pseudo-single-window mode, search engine tweaking, etc. Also, nightly builds optimized for various processors live at http://camino.ilnm.com.

"...I've never understood why someone with a Mac would bother with firefox." Simple: Firefox works with some sites (especially financial ones) that Safari can't handle. There are elements of my banking site that don't play well with Safari but Firefox has no problem with. Another reason is, as a web designer, I can be reasonably sure that if something works in Firefox for Mac, it will display virtually the same in Windoze. Unfortunately, I have to use Windoze to test in IE 6 as there's no Mac equivilent since M$ stopped developement on IE for Mac.

Does it matter what Camino used to be called? It's been called Camino for a while now. I might have to check it out. I like Firefox well enough but it has its flaws. What I really wish is that Apple would get on the ball and add an option to turn off GIF animations in Safari. Why is that so hard, I wonder? Every major browser (including Konqueror) on every platform has the option, so why not Safari? *Harumph*

Camino has improved by leaps and bounds lately -- it's relatively speedy, not unattractive, and uses a great rendering engine. I'd switch to it in a heartbeat if it offered the ability to save the browser's session state as can be done with Saft for Safari or SessionSaver for Firefox. There's an open feature request for this in Bugzilla (Bug 152147), but it's been languishing for years, and Mike Pinkerton is "not really a big fan" of the idea, unfortunately.

Camino is the best of the best. This latest version fixes the last bug that really bothered me, which was a slowness when typing in Gmail and PHPBB messageboard forms. The only problem left is the favicons disappear if the browser crashes or is force quit. But I'll put up with that for the most native-looking Mac browser that has ad blocking and every basic feature without too much bloat. It's nearly perfect.

I've made the switch. pro's: speed. looks good. cons (for me): -bookmarks don't magically sync between work and home (a la safari via .mac) -I miss inquisitor

Just wanted to say how pleased I am to see you reporting on Camino. It's been my browser of choice for awhile now. Simple and not loaded down with a bunch of unneeded features. I've never understood why someone with a Mac would bother with firefox. Ludwig

the sluggish scrolling is not camino's fault. its part of gecko. I read somewhere that it happens on pages with static backgrounds. there is an old bug somewhere in bugzilla that describes it.
