Speaking of anti-iPod sentiments...
"The tiny and insignificant box of memory chips known unto us as the iPod is warping the minds of it's users (otherwise known as iPeople), rendering them incapable of communication and destroying our culture - why talk when you can inject yourself with another dose of musical disharmony through the syringe of the iPod? Basically- iPods suck! Rise against this cult!"
How about a few kooky conspiracy theories to back that up, pal? Oh yeah, he's got those too.
"More and more people are beginning to believe that Apple (the company who make iPods) are monitoring iPeople everywhere, watching their every move and location gathering intelligence about it's users. It is now becoming a strong belief across the net that the FBI also have some involvement in the matter."- "...when you listen to iPods it is possible that a series of programmed high pitch frequencies undetectable by the human ear could be 'washing' your brain."
- "There is strong evidence that iPods have little aliens that live in them."

Can anybody have an "International day" ?
If so, I proclaim Saturday August 6th, international wear-your-iPod-with-pride day.

So - if they get on of these devices, will they feel better or worse about iPods?

Luckily I always wear my tinfoil hat while I listen to my iPod so I won't get brainwashed or possesed by aliens. It does seem a strange coincidence that "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" used pods to turn people into aliens and now Steve has come up with iPods to turn us into iPeople. :)

I don't care for iPod's at all myself (they lack too much for me), but that seems insanely stupid

"[W]hy talk when you can inject yourself with another dose of musical disharmony through the syringe of the iPod?"
OK, two questions. First, didn't these people live through the 80s and the 90s? I did, and I remember having the headphones to my Walkman jammed on my head much of the time. Now they're earbuds for iPods. These people have been grousing about the same thing for over twenty years now.
Second, do they really want to talk with the iPod listeners around them, or do they want to talk AT the iPod listeners around them? Because they're coming across as, "Hey! I have a whole list of things I hate about you, starting with your iPod. Take out those earbuds and I'll tell you all about them." Let me think about that. No.
(Interestingly, I started putting on the headphones and turning up the Walkman in the 80s as a way off tuning out my parents and their well-meaning but annoying advice about how to improve myself -- which probably would have included taking off the headphones and putting away the Walkman. It's all a vicious circle.)

This is just stupid.
If I'm listening to my iPod in public, chances are I don't feel like communicating to begin with. usually it's when I am grocery shopping, or in the elevator. It's a good way to avoid meaningless elevator chit-chat that usually ends abruptly anyway.
However, if I have one earbud dangling, this usually means "hey, I am listening to my iPod, but if you want to talk to me then speak into my open ear." I've experimented with this a few times and it usually works out that way.

The best reason to wear headphones in public:
Avoiding the dreaded "Can I help you?".
I never goto the Mall without my iPod because of situations like that. It works 19 times out of 20 (those people at the TMobile booth really don't get the message).
I did, however, wonder why Apple asked me to calibrate a location on the iPod when I regestered it. And don't even get me started on the weeks of nightmares where Steve Jobs would appear and ask me if I would like to register my iPod online or over the phone, then giving me a two-hour lecture about not stealing music and how my six-month old Powerbook was looking kinda shabby....

There are only two possible explanations for this weirdo:
1. He's just trying to stir up traffic (and ad income) by creating controversy.
2. He's the type who hates anything that is popular, and can not be objective about whether it's good. (Sometimes, most people actually like good stuff.)
He obviously needs a free iPod.

"Although slightly extreme sounding at first, this isn't too hard to believe as all new mobile cell phones are now equipped with GPRS which means the handsets location can be tracked accurately to the nearest metre any where in the world!"
Dude!!!! I mean, dude!!!!

Being an iPod owner, I suppose I'm lucky that the nearest meter is downtown in the school supply store. Thank God we still use the English system.
Who could hate the iPod? It helped me pass Russian, since I could load all 15 or so of my textbook's CDs on it and study anywhere. Sure, I could have done that with another mp3 player, but I liked the irony of using such a cool, trendy device to do what was essentially nerd work.

Randu: Cell phones can ONLY use it if you give permission each time OR in a 911 emergency.

I think this sentiments are totally unfounded: think about the ps2... that sold more than the ipod, but no one cares about it, think about mobile phones... carriers can know all the calls you make, all the text messages you send... is this less or more dangerous than a stupid sentiment generated by that guy's envy?

I just think it's interesting that even on an unofficial Apple site, there are enough people who are so filled with hatred towards a small white piece of plastic that they will spew invective about said piece of plastic in the comments of a story that already blasts said piece of plastic. To those of you who are so apopleptic with rage about the iPod, might I suggest there are truly more important things to get worked up over? I mean, it's just a DAP...
