Dvorak now pro-Apple?

apple_logoSpeaking of crufty, does anyone else remember when Dvorak used to make his guest spots on The ScreenSavers, snidely condemning all things Apple as a wasted computer path that only fools would follow? See both here and here for more of the same. Well, it looks like he's changing his song. In this article about the missing buzz surrounding the announcement of Windows Vista, Dvorak has a sub-heading (bolded and all caps) near the bottom of the first page that reads: "THE FUTURE OF DESKTOP COMPUTING." The first 'sentence' that starts that section? "Apple."

Dvorak then goes on to prognosticate: "Once the new Mac OS appears next year it will gravitate toward the existing x86 community much more rapidly than anticipated unless Apple does some incredibly dumb things to stop it. Personally I cannot see what they can do or why they'd want to stop it." He then goes on to discuss where he sees Windows, Linux, and even Google moving in this space. It's an interesting read, but fully conjectural. I'd like to see things go this route, but I'm willing to bet that if Apple does have any slip-ups along the way, Dvorak will suddenly flop back over to his old song and crucify Jobs et al. with glee.

The Mac-compatible Linux is not as far fetched as it seems. Don't forget there is GNUStep, an almost-compatible-to-Cocoa API for Linux. With someone like Google behind it, it could be made to be much more compatible, making Objective C code (mostly) source-compatible between OSX and OSGoogle. Note this doesn't apply to the Carbon API.

Did anybody read Dvorak's articles in both PC AND Mac magazines back in the early 90's? In the Mac magazines he railed on Apple. In the PC magazines he railed on DOS/Windows/Microsoft/IBM. The guy makes his living erecting house-of-cards arguments that the readership will find controversial. It's only through the gullibility of readers that he's still around.

Hmmm... I didn't know anybody even paid attention to Dvorak any more. He's just one of the countless many pundits that remind me of that old "Armchair quarterback" phrase. Sure he thinks he has a 'Vista' view of the computing enviroment (which he postulates that makes him better equipped to run the computer industry than anybody else), but give him control of an actual company and within a year it will be gone. I do have to gvie him credit, though, for figuring out a way to make money without producing anything useful.

Dvorak is a lot like a flag: he goes whichever way the wind is going. In his defense, he is a prolific writer and if one writes enough articles, one is bound to get it right now and again. (Statistics, you know.)

Time Warner didn't implode AOL; AOL's merger with Time Warner was the biggest scam ever pulled off. It was only a matter of time before TW figured out that AOL was all smoke and mirrors Dvorak is, to paraphrase Dylan, "a guy who just wants to be on the side that's winning." I don't put much stock into what he says.

"Yeah, I went there." Sam C, that was probably the funniest thing I've read all day! Fishes, narco.

I have an oooooold issue of Mac User (remember them?) with his editorial in which Dvorak predicted the partnership with IBM (Taligent, was it?) was going to result in IBM swallowing Apple whole and by the year 2000 nobody would remember who Apple was. What a maroon. Hey, maybe I should scan it in and email it to him. Thinks he's so smart...

I'm starting to think he does this on purpose. Every time he has a new column up the linkbloggers of the world have a fit. "look what dvorak said this time!" It's like he's the ann coulter of computing columns. Yeah, I went there.

Much of what Dvorak wrote makes sense, with the exception of speculation that Google could create their own Linux distribution that also was Mac OS X compatible. A Google Linux distribution isn't something to bet against, but speculating it could run Mac OS X apps natively is. I'd rather bet Google will buy pieces of AOL from Time Warner. For instance, buying AOL's Instant Messenger. WinAmp. Digital Cities. Mapquest. Or Movifone. AOL's dial-up biz would be sold off to one of the telecos with the hope that they could move most of the subscribers over to DSL or fibre without a large number of those subscribers being lured over to cable. Then again, Google could implode just like AOL did under Time Warner's management. Prior to Google, the AOL Time Warner merger looked to be the only credible competitor likely to be able to smash Microsoft. The lack of synergy ruined that possibility.

Oh come on... Dvorak isn't too bad - he's a pretty smart cat. Hasn't he been suggesting for years now that apple go x86? Is he really flip-flopping by keeping the same position and having the other guy change _their_ ways? (with a side effect coinciding with Dvorak's opinion). I love Apple, I have for a long time. That being said - honestly, who is the real flip-flopper in this story? +
