eMac.com domain for sale on eBay

emac ebayish logoIf you have $45,000,000 burning a hole in your pocket and you'd like to tango with Apple's legal department, chrisj5000 has got a domain for you. eMac.com is currently on the auction block. Not surprisingly, the seller says "We also have a large, well known computer manufacturer interested in the domain." You don't say!

Is the $45M price tag too rich for your blood? Well, he is willing to negotiate. After all, the appraisal only came in at $1.85M.

Of course this auction could just be a ploy to more visitors to the site (the seller says it averages only 200-300 visits a day), which currently has a page of links to buy auction software, hosting and other services.

Thanks, Todd!

"It does sound like this is to generate news and traffic, rather than a hefty sale." Which is exactly why sites shouldn't post news about it...[cough]

Well, a whois on GoDaddy reveals that a Chris Johnson of Burnaby, British Columbia is the registrant, so at least he isn't selling the Brooklyn Bridge or anything else he doesn't own. Still, at that price, who'd want it? (including Apple). It does sound like this is to generate news and traffic, rather than a hefty sale.

That's strange. If Apple had "eMac" as a registered trademark, I am sure they would have no problem disputing that domain, and it would only cost a couple of grand... (I believe the basic WIPO arbitration is $2,500). No need to invest 45 million. The WIPO could easily have that domain transferred to Apple if a claim of legal rights could be proven. (just my opinion)
