TivoTool for Mac OS X released

tivo_toolI love my TiVo, but its Mac compatibility is pretty poor. There's no official TiVo To Go client for the Mac, and while the TiVo Desktop software allows for the transfer of photos and music, it's not compatible with Tiger. What's left to do when you're left out in the cold like this? Build your own shelter, of course.

John Susek is a part of a team of developers collaborating on TivoTool, an application that lets you extract video - unencrypted - from your networked TiVo to your Mac. Once you've got your video, you can store it in iTunes, send it to iMovie, whatever you wish. TivoTool makes use of a familiar Mac OS X interface, so you don't have to sit in front of a terminal window to grab your shows (though there is a command line version, if that's your preference).

Before you download, however, be warned: You've got to execute some serious hacks on your TiVo to before you can download and stream unencrypted video. If you're comfortable with that, you may really enjoy TivoTool.

Actually, what would rock is if someone would write a program to rip MPEG streams out of .tivo files. Getting them onto your mac is easy.

Hey the reason this is written in WxWidgets is for Linux compatibility. Cocoa is great, but I can't port that to Linux. With WxWidgets I already have the GUI working in Linux and its not too much work to port it completely (just some minor work).

This article seems to suggest that the hacks will work on any Series 2 stand-alone TiVo. However, from researching things on dealdatabase.com, I am under the impression that the newer 540 models cannot be hacked without socketing the prom -- a complicated hardware hack. Has this changed? Or did the author of this article overlook the broad population of 540 owners?

I agree. I have been using it since the original command line tool but given time and the developers willingness, I think it will improve a lot. A widget would be nice but to me it isn't that important. Now we just need someone to figure a way to un-encrypt directshow TTG files on a mac without virtual pc. I know it is a longshot but I can still dream can't I?

FYI - you cannot perform Tivo Hacking on a Mac (sadly). The various boot CD's you need are PC only, and even things like mfstool don't work properly. I just went through this whole rigamarole a week or so ago, and trust me - it's MUCH easier to borrow a plain x86 PC for an evening than try to get it to work on a Mac (which it won't anyway). That being said, this tool does make me more interested in setting up unencrypted video streaming. Hmmmm...

I've been using this app for a little while now, and It's great.... sorta. I'd really like it if it were a Cocoa app instead of WxWidgets (I think this app's GUI is slower because of that) The Stream function needs a player controller, like in VLC so i can move around the movie. Ability to sort the list

Are there any places which show step-by-step instructions with pictures for the hacks? I am very interested in installing TiVoTool, but I am a visual learner. :)

Yes you can get tivo Desktop to work but not with Tivo To Go. You can only use the mac tivo desktop for HMO options such as HME, Music, and photos. I have been using tivotool for a while now and I love it. I know there are other mac solutions but I have a direcTivo so there is no re-encoding of the video. Also I don't want my PVR tied to my computer I want it to stand on it's own and you can't beat tivos UI. Too bad directv will stop supporting them. I just hope I can still use it after the support stops.
