Henrico County iBooks will go to residents first

dell dudeThe Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting that Henrico County, Virginia taxpayers will get first dibs on those $50 iBooks.

The Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to allow the Henrico residents the opportunity to buy the laptops, which are county property, at a fixed price before they are available for sale to the general public. Accordingly, "the sale is open to anyone who resides in or pays taxes on property in Henrico. Prospective purchasers must provide proof of residency or tax payment."

The date of the residents-only sale has also been changed to Tuesday, Aug. 16 and it will be held at the Richmond International Raceway. No date has been set for sale of the iBooks to the general public, assuming any are left.

Whew... glad that's settled!

everyone who is complaining is just mad because they dont get first dibs. it's only fair, it was OUR tax money that bought them in the first place, we should get the first chance to buy them. not to mention, the students will actually USE them and not just sell them on ebay like most people were planning on doing.

I was going to make a trip out there in hopes of fixing and ebaying a bunch of them, but the "one per person" bit stopped me. Now I'm really glad I'd not nailed down any plans. A cheap laptop is always too good to be true. :P

This is totally because they put this all over the web and it spread like wildfire. They did this to themselves. There goes any economy boost "Henrico County" could have gained by all the traveler's coming through the town...Smooth.

How generous of the board to let their constituents pay for the computers twice! :)

Read link isn't broken. It's still here (and there is still a link to it on RTD's homepage): http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031784228404

Interesting that the 'read' link is now broken. The article on the front page of the site was last updated when they hadn't yet decided. http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031784215571

Oh, well. I was going to make the trip but I guess I'll just have to plan something else for the day. I'm not that disappointed as I've heard that many of the computers have major problems. Now we'll just have to settle with taking bets on how quickly they'll sell out.
