Microsoft annnounces Messenger 5.0 for Mac

msn_messengerThis morning, Microsoft announced the availability of Messenger for Mac version 5.0. This release offers a number of new features, including: support for Live Communications Server 2005, enhanced messaging security, Public IM Connectivity and integration with the Global Address List, a tabbed view, a Mac OS-like brushed-metal interface and a lot more. According to the press release, Microsoft Messenger for Mac 5.0 is available today in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish (as of this writing, it is not yet on Microsoft's download page).

This announcement has prompted me to wonder about which instant message clients our readers use. I alternate between iChat and Adium myself. What is your client of choice?

I was disappointed with the new release... the version 7 in windose has already has support for new features with funny graphics, custom emoticons... and I was hoping this release will include all those. At least give us the "Nudge" button... that would have pushed me over to Messenger from Adium... i see no apparent reason to move from the earlier version to the new 5.0 from a normal end user's point of view... Adium is still better

Just curious- does anyone know if Yahoo! is *ever* going to release an updated version of Yahoo! Messenger for the Mac? Most of my friends are on Yahoo!

I use Adium exclusively except for iChat when I need to send a file. Sending a file does not work in Adium because the file transfer has to go through a variety of firewalls and ports, like if you have wireless and are on a bigger network (say in college dorms). iChat and AIM transfer *through* a central server so that they don't have to navigate through these obstacles. Adium doesn't have that luxury. I've actually gotten Adium file transfer to work by forwarding some ports and making sure they're not blocked by the Mac OS X firewall, but it's a lot of work and still wouldn't transfer to certain people. For more info search the Adium forums.

Is this why Adium cannot connect to msn as of this time yesterday or is this just me?

iChat! That's it. There was a tutorial online a while ago about how to get MSN to work with it. ICQ already does, as well as AIM and dot Mac, so why use anything else?? It's Apple made, so it works. Here's that link to the tutorial: http://allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber/

I primarily use aMSN normally, but I may try this new version for a bit. My main reason for using aMSN over regular MSN was the display pics, but now that they've fixed that... Though aMSN does have many features that MSN doesn't, such as event logging, saving of display pictures, and knowing when someone is opening up a chat window to peek at your picture or being a chat. But it's also always had a bit of an unfinished feel to it. Every once and a while I'll go on and won't be able to click anything properly and have to restart the damn program. It'd be nice to have something that, although less featured, just works. But yes, still a big disappointment...where's the webcam support? Viewing MSN spaces? The display pics in the contact list? PERSONAL MESSAGES?! Gah! That one probably bugs me the most, because I can't believe it's that tough to implement. I've never used iChat except for like two people I know who use AIM. I love it but, in Canada, everyone uses MSN.

What a disappointment. We still don't have half of the features of MSN Messenger 7 for Windows. What did this "update" add, besides the corporate tab? Display pictures and a brushed metal UI. Bleh, I'm going back to Adium.

I've been using iChat with Jabber via PSi for months - its seamless. I had to do some searching around for a Euro-server... but iChat now kinda incorporates all these networks through Jabber goodness. MSN for Mac- why bother with an update. Kill-the-ware! *printing shirts now* heh.

I just downloaded it and tried it out. Ugh. No webcams, and it's missing a lot of other Windows features, not that I'm surprised.
