$50 iBooks cause stampede!
No, you aren't reading The Onion. Yes, there really was a stampede. No one was seriously injured, but this morning's $50 iBook sale was an insane mob scene by all accounts. Lines of parked cars started to form around 1:30am and by 7:00am, when the sale was to begin, the line was said to be more than a 1/2 mile long, while thousands of people rushed the gate for an opportunity to spend $50 on a 4-year old iBook that stood a good chance of barely being worth even that little. There are reports of baby strollers being tipped over and mangled and one old man in a walker was reportedly trampled to the ground! More after the jump...One of our readers, Jason Coleman, sent us this first-hand account of the scene:
"My wife and I just came from the Henrico County iBook sale. It was absolutely insane. The estimate was that about 12,000 people showed up. There were a number of people injured when people rushed the gates. [link]"
"We left after 4 hours of baking in the sun, empty-handed. There were some rumors that the actual number was something less than 1,000, but I couldn't say for sure. However many, there were many times that in people who wanted one and the crowd control... well it wasn't being controlled really. Just the police shouting at people to keep backing up, even though there was no where to go. Insane. Your readers should be very glad that they didn't come. Just wait and buy one for cheap on eBay next week."
Phi sent us a link to some video footage. It's not pretty.
I just hope Henrico County and everyone involved in this fiasco has learned how to handle future sales so that this never happens again. They really did muck this up pretty badly.
Any other eyewitnesses who'd like to share with us?
Thanks to everyone who kept us informed on today's events in VA.

They are beat up, thrown around, tossed on the floor, dropped, and any other abuse you can think up for it. However, the county did buy G-4's this year, so if you got one of those I guess you're lucky. They would only have 1 years worth of abuse by teenage kids on it.

August 20 2005 at 8:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe sale was insane from the start. Henrico upset people by making the sale private, but I was completely relieved because I knew there was going to be chaos, and disorder. The policeman opened a large gate to relieve the stampede he knew was going to occur. There was no authority or order. The Police had that little white lady screaming at people who were not listening. Area cops are not equipped to handle crowd control, they know mase, and shooting. They did not know how to handle a situation if they could not use violence as a means of control. The worst part is that people were injured, and Henrico officials say they do not understand why the world has seen this footage, that they were properly prepared, and that they had no way of forseeing a stampede would occur. Henrico needs to admit their mistakes and move on.

August 18 2005 at 9:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyas i was reading through the comments, one stuck out as one of the most ignorant, small minded, and stereotypical comments i have ever read. in part it reads as follows: Also, Henrico County had the sale in one of the worste parts of the county, where shootings are regular and unemployment is as common as any other job description. If you watch the video, it is obvious that a vast majority of the people there were from the nearby area with the high crime, and it was to be expected that they would come in mass for these damn laptops. Instead of a high crime area, they easily could have booked someplace else like the newly built convention center downtown. WHAT?!??! regardless of where the sale would have taken place, something like the "riot" would have still happened. there is crime everywhere. i live in the west end, short pump actually. obviously the author from the quote blog doesn't recognize the economic disparity that plagues this county. the people both black and white who live in the east end are not in the same socioeconomic class as perhaps he is. i think the author should (re)learn his grammar instead of talking down to the people who live by the RIR. case in point: NEVER start a sentence with "me." (read over your silly little blog, and EDIT it in order to find your blatant and blaring mistake!)
