Mac Gaming: Myst V demo available
If I could have even one quarter of the time I A demo became available today, and I played it for a while tonight. It's just as beautiful as I remember, with the fantastic scenery and soundtrack. There are more interactive elements in this version than the original, which my 1.25ghz iMac seemed to handle well, though the introductory cinematic sequence was a little jumpy. Still, the brief experience brought back memories of looking at my old desk clock to see it read 2:30 AM.
At 457MB, it's a hefty download, and the system requirements are kind of steep, too: Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later, G4/1GHz or faster, 256MB RAM and an ATI Radeon 7000 or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better 3D graphics with at least 32MB VRAM. The formal release is scheduled for September and will cost $49.95US.

found it very choppy on my new ibook (1.33/12")
the lack of car-stealing and 'hot-coffee' sequences also put me off...

"If I could have even one quarter of the time I wasted spent enjoying Myst, I'd live forever"
Someday you'll have to sit down with us over a cold beer and explain the math behind this...

Jer: Oh, it's very, very deep stuff. Thought I imagine that, after a few cold ones, it'd all make sense...

I found the demo to be unresponsive and 'jumpy' on my iMac G5 1.6MHz/512MB. Couldn't continue after 5 min. because the slowness was aggrevating. The previous Myst games were much better.

The demo seems to run great on my PowerBook - 1.5 MHz G4, 1 GB RAM

...and this is why Apple is switching to Intel. Atlavec can just bite me. It's time for some raw processing speed folks. Bring on the 3.6GHz dual Pentiums or whatever. Either way it will be faster than the current consumer Macs. BTW, I switched to Macs in Nov 2004 so I'm not a Mac hater - I have three now! I love them and am excited for the move to Intel.

It's the video ram -- or lack thereof -- which gives you choppiness. It's choppy at 32 mb and 64 mb, but very smooth with a video card bearing 128 mb.
