All this talk of GTalk had me thinking about Adium, so I launched it. That's how I discovered that my favorite IM client had been updated to 0.83.If you aren't familiar with Adium then you haven't been reading TUAW too carefully, it is the IM client of choice amongst the TUAW crew. It handles AIM, ICQ, Jabber, Yahoo!, and GTalk (or so it seems) that's just to name a few. It looks like .83 focuses on squashing lots of bugs and making the app all that more stable, you can feel free to read the version history, if you're into that kind of thing.

And as quickly as it was up, it's down. Turns out the "most stable version of Adium yet" has had some problems displaying people's contacts. 0.83 has been pulled, and a link to 0.82 is now up to allow those having difficulty to downgrade.

I had to revert to .82 because of an issue with it saying half of my contacts were offline.

I don't remember what version it began, but I can transfer files using Adium 0.82. Looking forward to version 0.84.

I've always had issues with file transfers with this program too. I still use it daily, but have to launch iChat for transfers, which blows.

I tried Proteus and it is non-stop crashing. Back to Adium 0.82. Hell, the latest Adium svn didn't crash as much as Proteus 4.12b is crashing.

the file transfer issue is the _only_ reason I don't use Adium. I love adium for everything else. I love the little scripts, the skins, the different IM protocols, the tabbed window and the icon.
I still prefer the look of the ichat window though (the beautiful cartoony balloons and how they alternate sides). I wish adium had a skin that could duplicate that. I know there are some that come close though.

@peeweejd: Have a look at http://homepage.mac.com/mbh0ckey. It's a recompiled version of Adium with the brushed metal style. Just like iChat...

note - a gaim "google summer of code" developer is hard at work making gaim (and thus adium & proteus) able to tranfer AIM and ICQ files through NATS, routers, and firewalls.
here is a journal of his work.

I wonder how long it will take for this to pass review and get into adium's version of libgaim.
Praise be unto them apples.
