Google Talk Broadcast Message

So, last night, while I was chatting away at the new Google Talk via iChat, this little Google broadcast message appeared:
google broadcast
Crazy! A Google broadcast message over Google Talk that was only listed as gmail.com. I tried to add this to my buddy list, hoping it was a bot (b/c when I am bored, I love messing with bots). Anyway, it wasn't and nothing happened.

Anyway, this got me thinking: Big Google Brother can broadcast to all the users in Gmail. If Google ever rejects their "don't be evil" mantra, this could be used for nefarious purposes. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this with any other chat services.

After sleeping on it, I've decided that I'm not *furious* with Google for failing to release a Mac client yet. One is supposedly in the works, and in the meantime Google Talk works with both iChat and Adium. In iChat, you can have audio chats with another person running iChat (and my guess is that this is an iChat feature; I think the Google Talk account just handles the handshake between the two or more audio chatters, and then it is passed along to another protocol). Ideally, however, I'd want a Mac client, or a Google Talk plug-in for iChat. That would rock....oh, and also, server to server connections are needed so that Google Talk can communicate with the entire Jabber sphere. Do it Google. Do it now!

I got one of those messages last night as well and was a bit confused. I'm still unsure what that was all about. As far as a Mac client, I wouldn't hold my breath. It would be nice, but using iChat or Admium (which will probably have VoIP working sometime soon) works just fine. I don't see a big need to rush out a Google client when these widely used pieces of software have dominated instant messaging OS X. Not to say that Google shouldn't release one.

Jabber supports broadcast messages. Given GTalk is based on Jabber/XMPP, I don't see a reason why GTalk wouldn't support it.

What I've noticed is... The Audio/Talk icon/do-hicky is enabled ... we can talk too it seems. (or is it just iChat jabber to iChat jabber?

I would like Google and/or Apple to offer some cash to AOL to own a chunk of *Instant Messenger*. It would be nice to finally have "offline messages" in AIM/iChat as ICQ and Yahoo Messenger have featured for years. And it doesn't seem AOL is much too interested in really making a developmental committment to AIM except as another advertising medium which is a shame since all the FTC/FCC concerns about adding features to AIM have been removed.

I tried this out last night, got the same message as C.K, and was a bit freaked out. However, I freak out at very minor things, so this isn't necessarily a major thing. I didn't need to sleep on it, I'm not furious about it. If google wants to be in on my chatting about the latest gossip in the porn world, hey, no worries here. C.K., please keep up the rants against google and their lack of instantaneous Mac software releases. Their corporate mantra is "do no evil" yet they submit software only for the evil empire first, and not for Macdenizens? What's up with that? Anyway, held a convo with a brother in Oregon and it was great. Overall, I'm pleased enough to say it works with iChat, but pissed there isn't a Mac client.

Yeah, "a Mac client is in the works." That's what they've said about Google Earth. I highly doubt they'll put out a Mac client since it works with iChat. And why have so many freaking IM clients open? Just stick to one program.
